I just realized this while re-watching SS on ABC tonight, Firenze tells Harry that one who drinks the unicorn blood will suffer a "half life, a cursed life." Which again relates to Voldemort and Tom Riddle.

We may never know why she wanted to use that title.
The loved part sounds interesting.
Perhaps it'll come up later. She may have found a different way to incorporate whatever it was she was intending to do with it.

swishandflick - Quirrel lived that half-life. Voldemort used half his body so in a way he already was.

It was Half-Blood, not Half-Loved - I've seen the interview. The website where the interview is posted must have misheard what she said.

Not really. When JK thought of the title "The Half Blood Prince" she had planed for the book to be about Volderemot`s past when he was Tom Riddle. We were to find out alot more about Tom life but the book became more about the Chamber instead. So I guess JK changed the title to Chamber of Secrets as it fitted what the book was about more then the Half Blood Prince would. I mean we only find out about Tom towards the end, so it would not make much sence to call the book Half Blood Prince if it`s not the main story.

My guess is that JK had planed for the main story to be about Voldermort as Tom Riddle with the Chamber being the side story. But I guess as the srory developed the Chamber took the main story line and Tom Riddle became the side story.

I think I understand now why she didn't use the title.
Where would the mystery be if someone figured out she was referring to Riddle? Even if no one had figured out she referred to younger Voldemort we'd know the heir wasn't a girl.

I think Chamber of Secrets was perfect. It didn't give too much away.

The title has nothing to do with that title!

Kudos to Jo for choosing Chamber of Secrets instead of Half-Blood Prince. The finished work does not accurately reflect the title, so obviously CoS was a better fit.

So, if the title of CoS was supposed to be 'Half-Blood,' but it ended up not relating to the plot, what possible plot points would now make that title appropriate?
Spoiler: show
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
?

Obviously its hard to tell when someone is joking when you don't know them personally, but I have a feeling it could be this time.

[/b]It does sound like a definate answer, but since its simple question and answer its hard to tell. If it isn't a joke, I agree with those who mentioned a possible connection to the Tom Riddle plotline. Though, she does say it has nothing to do with the plot and we can only gather information from what we've read.
Well, at that time, it was only her second book, so if she had called it that, would it have defined her style?

I'm sure her titles are all well-considered before they are applied to her books.
She is very thorough in every other aspect of the books, so I'm sure she gives a lot of thought to the names too.

Yes, and I looked at the interview that Bobtduck posted the link to, and on my screen it definitely says half-blood, and not half-loved. This is the quote from the interview:

"What was the original working title of Chamber of Secrets?
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I quite liked that title, unfortunately the story bore no relation whatsoever to the title by the time I'd finished. "

Where did you see that "half-loved"? I can't seem to find it, unfortunately.

I think that the "Half blood prince" refers to Voldemort. If she was really going to name the 2nd book, "the half blood prince", then that would have to have refered to Volemort. I mean, it makes perfect sense. Voldemort is after all half blood, and prince doesn't have to mean actual prince.

Quite an appropriate topic now that the new title for Book 6 has been released. Of course, we can now eliminate Voldemort/TR & Harry from this equation, but I gather that this is probably better discussed on the Divination thread. Just the same, we will find out why she was going to name book 2 Half-Blood Prince...the torture of waiting!!! Just see how fast my pre-order will be made when it is announced!

The transcript of the BBC interview was mispelled until yesterday. Google's cache still has the version with the mistake: http://www.google.com.ar/search?q=ca...rince%22&hl=es

You can see that also Firenze is mispelled as Ferenzi, which was also corrected.

I think it's pretty amazing that this thread was started in may, before we even knew the title of book 6!

Since Rowling decided this time around to go with the title, I think that the half-blood prince refers to a new character we haven't heard about. Possibly, the real heir to Gryffindor, which is not Harry.

Yep probably a new character. But if not then we can be sure noone on the whole internet has guessed it. The way Rowling always has us fooled. I think it's Peeves.
