Re: Freedom of Speech

Besides, you need not be a Catholic to go to Notre Dame...as I have demonstrated, Notre Dame has about 10% non Christians as students...

That's right as with any school associated with any religion. I think I used the wrong term. I couldn't think of the exact term the girl used so I substituted Catholic church, because it was the closest thing I could come up with. Let me look up what the correct term is. This is in regards to the honorary degree, which is different than giving a graduate a real degree.

Here's a link to the video of the interview: Opposing Opinions.
To quote Emily Toates from the interview: "A few years back the US Catholic Council of Bishops stated that a Catholic University can't honor a politician or public figure who has been outspoken in their support of abortion."

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I may disagree with you politically, religiously, and/or on Snape but that doesn't mean I dislike you.

Re: Freedom of Speech

1. Do you believe David Horowitz to be correct in his analysis?
I don't really have an opinion on his comment for lack of general information on the topic world wide. However, he certainly had the right to state his view.

2. Do you believe that Professor Dana Cloud went to far? Or not far enough?
She too has the right to state her view - to the degree she desires as long as she does not violate the 1st amendment, which I don't feel she did.

3. Do you believe that it is right that guest speakers/University officials feel the need to bring/provide bodyguards to an event to which they were invited?
Well the premise I feel is not good overall. If bodyguards are being brought along, it is almost like the speaker (or host) expects for 'fighting words' to be spoken (perhaps even in violation of the constitution - kind of hard to do though.) That should not be the 'plan' - and I would say they don't expect it to be, but just feel it might turn out that way. I think if the situation has proven to be that tense in the past and is expected, they should send a film.

4. Has "Freedom of Speech" lost its meaning in today's society?
Its watered down quite a bit. But no, for the most part, it still has meaning. There is a lot of give and take involved, but I think that is sometimes overlooked.

5. What has happened to respectfully listening to a speaker from the opposing view point without throwing insults?
When was this occurring? I think that we've always had and always will have this type of behavior going on. General insults are not unconstitutional though, so one has to just grin and bear it, and present their view - hopefully in a less ferocious manner - they'll win more hearts that way anyhow, especially after being insulted (unless their view is utterly atrocious).
