Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

No one can deny that the Kennedy family has been an historical one in American history. Tonight the news comes that the last Kennedy brother has passed away. Sometimes controversial, but undeniably American, the Kennedys have influenced politics and national policy for so many years.

With Senator Kennedy's passing, a legendary legacy's chapter comes to a sad close.

I would like to express my personal sadness at his passing and take a moment to honor his contribution to our country.

Prayers to the Kennedy family.

Rest in peace, Ted Kennedy...

(I remember actually seeing him in the Senate during a high school trip to DC. So sad...)

Re: Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

I probably disagreed with Senator Kennedy on 99% of things he supported, but the underlying thing about the man was that he offered and earned a tremendous amount of respect from his opponents.

He was the last true statesman liberal in the Senate. He would work with his opponents, not lambast them with slurs and rhetoric. Some of his best friends were Cal Thomas and Orrin Hatch. He had the gumption to go and speak to the Moral Majority in 1982 and to stand by his principles.

Most of all, he didn't take the battle home, he didn't show personal animus towards his opponents after the sessions were over.

I respected Senator Kennedy for strength of his convictions, of his his commitment to family and country, as well as for his acknowledgement that his opponents weren't monsters or evil. He was a true compromiser and a force to reckoned with.

May God grant him the peace he deserves and bless him on his reunion with his brothers and sister.

Re: Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

I was never that huge a fan of Teddy K, but I think that the rememberances of him as "the most effective senator of his lifetime" aren't hyperbole. It's part of why he was both loved and hated so much.

For me, this is an odd day. Growing up in Boston, he was "the" senator. I can't remember a time without Kennedy as senator, and neither can the majority of those who grew up in Massachusetts.

His ability to maintain friendships with those who were across the aisle was key to his success in legislating, too, I think, in that he always had someone he could go to to craft a bill where at least some support could be garnered. Yet, I think he always "won" a bit more in his efforts than many of those he partnered with, to the point where I read an article once where Senate Republican leadership quietly admonished its members to not cosponsor legislation with Kennedy.

I think it can remain to be debated whether his large impact on the country as a whole was good or bad, but I don't think it can really be questioned that he had a huge impact, and that in many ways he was the perfect senator (politically, not personally). In his prime had a unique ability to get things done and advance the cause of liberalism and to help his constituents, the citizens of Massachusetts.

I was never into politics and never will be, so I never really paid attention to him. However, it is sad that he has died, though I feel he lived a good life. My thoughts and condolences go out to the family.

Rest in peace, Teddy.

Massachusetts, the Senate, and the country in general won't be the same without you.

It certainly is sad to see him pass just when Healthcare reform was finally beginning to gain some ground. Just last year he said Healthcare was the "cause of my life." I wish the Kennedy family well, and truly am sad for the passing of a legend.

Re: Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

The timing of Senator Kennedy's passing is very ironic in regard to health care reforms which has been so important to him.

I came across President Obama and the first Lady's message this morning:
from the first familyMichelle and I were heartbroken to learn this morning of the death of
our dear friend, Senator Ted Kennedy.

For five decades, virtually every major piece of legislation to advance
the civil rights, health and economic well being of the American people
bore his name and resulted from his efforts.

I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl
of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his
confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And
even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I’ve profited
as President from his encouragement and wisdom.

An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country
has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers
and became the greatest United States Senator of our time.

And the Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength
and support through good times and bad.

Our hearts and prayers go out to them today–to his wonderful wife,
Vicki, his children Ted Jr., Patrick and Kara, his grandchildren and his
extended family.

So, so true.

I heard about his passing this morning. It was really sad. He did a lot in his lifetime in terms of working to try to get something passed in terms of health care for the general public, along with helping to improve schooling and all that. His presence will truly be missed.

RIP fair Lion (Ted Kennedy), you'll be missed by all.

Re: Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

Time has a nice article about Senator Kennedy's life.
TimeOn the weekend of his Inauguration in 1961, John Kennedy gave Ted, the last born of the Kennedy siblings, an engraved cigarette box. It read, "And the last shall be first." That was almost 50 years ago. Neither of them knew then in just what ways that prophecy might turn out to be true.

I have to say, I watched most of the memorial last night and the services today. Sen. Kennedy's son took the show today. He must be so proud of his kids and he's done a good job with his own children and all the neices and nephews he was the father figure for after his brothers' deaths.

I watched parts of the memorial myself and it was good to see the family as a whole taking up the sword if you will (for lack of a better phrase). The prayers from the nieces, nephews, and grandchildren were some of the most touching stuff that I've seen in quite sometime.

Re: Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy: RIP

When I reflect on Ted Kennedy's legacy, I find myself agreeing with Dick Morris in that his best moment was in working with George W. Bush on No Child Left Behind.

RIP.
