Wasn't meant literally; more of a live until you die kind of thing. His relationship with Tonks isn't going to affect whether he lives or dies. So from that point of view, why should he be cautious?

If they are with each other, at least they will be happy and not miserable, if the end is around the corner. Lupin really seems unafraid of death and I would wager that Tonks has a similar view.

Life is life; you should always do today what you intended doing tomorrow because tomorrow may never come. We plan ahead because without that we would probably be unable to cope with the fact that each day may be our last. Being faced with your mortality in a paradoxical way makes you less cautious, not more.

Tonks has the right idea, not Lupin, he was too preoccupied with his: ‘too old, too poor, too dangerous’. None of that really matters, as Tonks rightly states.

'Destiny is not a matter of chance it is a matter of choice.' Anon

'Why is every critical moment in fate or the adult or child so clearly coloured by emotion? Vygotsky
