I only read one of the amazon summeries, I much prefered the book version of the stories because the quality of writing was I feel much better and the descriptions were better- it was a story rather than a what happens in a story article

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I haven't read the amazon summaries in ages but either way, i still like having the actual book better. these are meant to be for young children and are fairy tales so we should judge them as we would with our own "muggle" fairy tales. You wouldn't expect a five year old to read and understand something like Moby Dick. Fairy tales are supposed to short and sweet, enjoyable and carry some sort of message in them and I think the Tales of Beedle the Bard do very well with it.

All fairy tales I know are much longer that JKR's though. Usually they are more detailed (and we know how beautyfully Jo can describe things ) and more repetitions. I couldn't shake of the feeling that they were summeries. I don't think they will make it into the list of young childrens most favourite bedtime story's [not for children who are to young to know HP and appreciate Dumbledore's comments]

That's how I feel about the school books. They tought me not to expect to much form the 'extra stuff', and as my expectations were low I was pleasently suprised .

That's exactly how i felt. When i finished the book i thought: "fine, now start with the full fairy tales".

At least in my country fairy tales are much longer.

I don't know....I'm chinese so I haven't really read any american fairy tales even though I read books, but in chinese ones, usually they're pretty similar to the ones JKR gave us

Guys, I saw Arthur Levine's ORIGINAL COPY today at the NYPL!!!
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! I got pics from every angle, and just stood there for a while taking it in. What I wouldn't have given to have that copy. And Jo is quite an amazing artist, the pics in the book we have don't do her justice!

I agree with this. I felt very pleased with myself overall for donating the money and for getting so much enjoyment out of the book along the way. It was a real pleasure- and I also loved the stories, so as you say, the benefit was sort of twofold!

Loved it! I feel like picking up the series and immersing myself in it all over again now though. The Albus Dumbledore commentary was great, interesting little tidbits about the series, such as understanding the animosity between DD and Lucius a kuttke deeper. I have to say I liked Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump and The Fountain of Fair Fortune the most.

Hi
Is the book written in plain English and easy to understand ?
Or should I wait until the book translated into Arab?

I'm convinced that anyone who is able to take part in the discussions here at CoS, is also able to understand this books as well as all the HP books. But to start with a book like this with short and easy stories rather than DH is a good idea.

Give it a try!

I'm a non-native speaker too, and I didn't have any problems. There were a few words I had to look up but I agree with Alastor if you aren't sure it's worth a try

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I really really had no intention whatsoever of buying this book. I thought...yeah If it's really cheap I might buy it one day. Otherwise Harry Potter ended for me with book seven and I didn't see the point in buying it. I even said to my dad that I didn't want it for Christmas in case he was thinking of getting it for me. Well, anyway he did get for me. It is a cute book though, I particularly liked the Hopping pot one

You didn't want to even donate to charity or at least read it through once?

By the way how much money was it for the rest of you? Because it was only $7 for me but I think it was a discount

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I read it this morning before and after my present-rush-is-over-nap

I enjoyed them a lot. They're cute kid stories and of course it was nice to have something new from Jo, because I miss her writing.

My uncle was disappointed at the size, but I didn't think it was too short. I mean, they're meant to be fairy tales for children.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

It was ok, nothing spectacular. Dumbledore's note's is what made it worth buying it. Also when I was reading DH I was curious to know the other stories in 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard" so it's good to finally know.

Amazon sells it for $7 but I heard that Barnes & Noble or Borders sold it for $13. That's way overpriced for a book that small. But I suppose with the economy the way it is, they were willing to try to get more money for themselves.
