GRRM should be getting back from Spain today, so hopefully we'll find out when A Dance With Dragons will be released soon.

But he has a con in Denver Aug 6-10th. So I doubt much with Dance will get touched until mid August. Then it looks like a clean run of writing time through the end of the year with only a couple of short con's, both which are close to his home.

My impression from his blog entries is that he was more than just a couple of weeks away from being finished. I hope he can get it done by the end of the year. Otherwise, I think I will lose hope in the series ever being finished.

Well, I sort of hope that Dance with Dragons is the most difficult one for him, as it's sort of in the middle, and that the other ones will be quicker :/. I've seen his last update and it doesn't say anything about the books, just about his trip.

True, his latest blog entry is just about the trip. I am referring to the entries in April where he was growing more concerned about not meeting the June deadline. I just get the feeling he has a couple more months work to do, otherwise it would have been a more cautiously hopeful type of response to the deadline.

My understanding (which isn't much) is he rewrote many of the chapters he took out of AFFC to make them flow better.

Anyway, here's to hoping he finishes Dance soon, and hoping HBO greenlights the TV show!

It's really time for the next book. Not that he ever meets his deadlines but it's been a while. And the series...well. Even if HBO says yes, we can't expect it before next fall, can we?

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire

At least GRRM didn't completely deny the Spring release in his blog yet, did he? I'm new to Asoiaf, but already as excited that I keep the hope for at least early summer, if not June still.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire

Well, since we don't know when or how, and GRRM doesn't speak, maybe we could just spend our time talking about several random aspects in the books. (many many possibilities)

So I'll just throw some random questions into the thread

Which organisation would you rather join:
  • Brotherhood without banners
  • Nights Watch
  • Kings Guard
  • Bloody Mummers
  • Maesters
  • Wildlings
  • Rainbow Guard
  • Unsullied
  • Any other

Which is your favourite Noble House?
Your favourite famous Knight?
Your favourite supporting character?

Or we could discuss similarities of Harry Potter characters to Asoiaf characters. I spontaneous see:
  • Sam Tarly - Neville Longbottom
  • Mag the Mighty - Grawp
  • Petyr Littlefinger - Snape
  • Sandor Clegane - Mad Eye Moody

It's the Faceless Men for me thanks. Valar Morghulis!

Which is your favourite Noble House?
Starks of course. But the Martell's are growing on me.

Your favourite famous Knight?
Brynden Tully (The Blackfish)

Your favourite supporting character?
I'd have to go with Pytr Baelish.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire

Which is your favourite Noble House?
House Martell. They rock. Unbowed. Unbent. Unbroken. The Starks would still be my favourite house if its most loveable member was actually legitimate.

Your favourite famous Knight?
Rhaegar Targaryan. What can I say? He liked books.

Your favourite supporting character?

Ghost.

My first idea was 'Jamie', but it makes no sense whatsoever. She might say something what convinces frazzled!cat to release her. At least I think we can assume she does not get killed in that scene.

Spoiler: show
I was reading Tyrion's sample chapter of ADWD yesterday and actually began to realize again that many people are off trying to reach Deanary first. And now even Tyrion might the first of the Westeros clan members to see her (that's still very open, though). I began to wonder what happened if he did. Tyrion became so frustrated after the revelation about Tysha, would this be more of a political meeting or could he actually find the kindness back he had for many in the first books of the series?

A bit emo though for a knight. And unfortunately also very dead

That's an interesting question. But not only how Tyrion will react to Dany, but how Dany will react to meeting the brother of the guy who murdered and betrayed her dad. Because that's the first thing she's going to think and given Danys occasional temper, Tyrion should be careful that he doesn't end up dracarysed.

On the other hand, I'm a big fan of a Tyrion-Dany cooperation, because Tyrion hopefully will realise that this is the best option (besides it would deeply annoy Cersei, which is a plus)...and if the saddle making of Tyrion for Bran in book one was a foreshadowing, then either Bran or Tyrion will end up flying. On a dragon, a real one

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire

Spoiler: show
I'm pretty sure you're right with the flying on a dragon thing - and somehow wish it were Tyrion. Bran will be able to do in his mind always.

I'm not so worried about Dany and Jamie (aka his brother). There are two ways of possible solution without getting anyone blamed I think: first of Tyrion is currently planing to kill his brother as he said in the sample. Dany will probably believe him so much, if he keeps his current mood. On the other hand I'm pretty sure we saw some hints already that both, Jamie and Tyrion, do miss each other, so they'll probably reunite one day. Jamie as also Tyrion are in an amazingly bad honour in Westeros, but there are people who begin to believe them. Maybe this will increase or perhaps even with Dany as one of the first who supports them. It's mainly guesswork by me right now, though.

Since Vary is no more with Tyrion (what was probably to expect though) - do we have any good guesses where he could be right now?

I'm with you there. I couldn't even finish the first book. Characters I care about leave, plots that interest me are resolved or set aside, and the new ones fail to inspire any interest or attraction no matter how long I stuck with them. You can only throw so many emotional sucker punches before the reader gives up. I've suffered with the characters, and now I've got lots of dull things happening to various unsympathetic characters.

At this point, I don't care if George R. R. Martin's fictional world goes up in infernal flames or if the whole place gets overwhelmed by Others.

I love the series for its unpredictability and shocking plot twists. GRRM's world just isn't fair and people die - no matter if they're good or bad. I like that. It is refreshing in this genre.

I'm with Moriath here. For once we have not a story where the good people win and the bad people are punished, but a quite 'realistic' universe, where the good guys make mistakes and pay for it. With their life or worse. And we have characters that are not black or white but mostly on the grey area.
I of course like some plotlines better than others, but overall I like the very detailed contstruction of the characters and plots as well as how it all is somehow connected.

You can't be serious! Prepare for battle! The crow wins in the entertainment section but Ghost wins everything else. He's loyal, smart, intuitive and resilient. He's basically a cool, red-eyed version of Jon Snow!

But the Crow knows everything and predicts everything. Besides, being the red eyed version of Jon is not really a compliment, as IMPO Jon is a bit, well boring. Sorry Jon.

NEWS!!!

Don't get your hopes up, it's NOT about the next book but still cool enough!

HBO gives green light for ASOIAF pilot

And the opinion about it from GRRMartin

Thoughts? Casts speculations? Hopes? Fears?

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire

It's odd, but somehow I'm not very excited by the news yet, although (or because?) I adore the series. It is so rich in my imagination I'm not too sure I'll like or even watch a TV series - yet. Maybe this changes later on. I'll definitely check in the reviews once it is out. Or perhaps getting a bit excited while things will get produced already.
