Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

It was a very bittersweet feeling and I missed Dumbledore terribly. The book was nice to read but I think I agree with everyone who said the notes were the best part; I don't think I would've enjoyed it without Dumbledore's notes.

I loved the beautiful cover though, and the roses on every page. Just looking at the book makes me happy!

The main surprise for me was that after constantly hearing that "Seven in the most magical number" that there would only be 5 stories and not 7 tales.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I got them some six months back and only just read them. I liked them; they reminded me of the world of Harry Potter, especially Dumbledore's notes. I found a couple of things interesting. One was that until the 1750+ the three unforgivables were really not the unforgivables. All curses were acceptable, which I found strange, for I had for some reason thought all of them as unforgivable from the times of the Founders or even before.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I was a bit disappointed. I thought there would be more of them, kind of like Grimms' Fairy Tales. Another thing, and this may have been covered earlier and I missed it. I thought Albus Dumbledore only had a sister and a brother. But, he mentions having more in his notes. Did I miss something in the HP series??

It was interesting (what I did read)...not really what I expected. Never got through the entire thing to be honest...decided to re-read the books first. I'll go back to it later to get through the end.

I remember it mentioning his mother, Kendra; brother, Aberforth, and his "maiden aunt Honoria", but I don't recall it saying he had more siblings anywhere.

Very interesting book, Liked it, Not what I would have expected. I liked the perspective of how it was written

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

i picked the book up from our waterstones in the SU. i went to mcdonalds at lunch and pretty much read it all. i loved it. especially the way dumbledore comments on them afterwards. haha.

the only bad thing is that i forgot to bring it back to uni with me this time, so i can't re-read it. boo.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I was really excited about the book, I had seen the spanish edition, but I wanted to read it in english. My sister bought it for me. I really loved the drawings and the cover. But I was disappointed. Very few stories, I really can't remember them now. There was one with three ladies and a fountain or something?? Well, that was the one I liked the most.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I think I read somewhere that Jo did plan on writing more stories. But she was writing by hand, and it became to difficult to come up with the stories and that is why she limited it to five stories. I only read the book once, and I am not in a hurry to read it again. They were o.k., not great, but I miss Harry Potter more.

I thought the stories were...okay...I mean they weren't great, but they weren't bad. I really liked this book because of Dumbledore's commentary. I liked how we could learn more little things from Harry's world even though the stories weren't particuarly interesing. I still enjoyed them though.

I didn't know there were two versions.(other than the usual American or British ones.) Abridged??? Why would anyone abridge something that short?

From The Fountain of Fair Fortune thread:

This is one aspect of The Tales of Beedle the Bard I enjoy most. Not only does it add depth to the Potter world by elucidating details of wizards' tales and childhoods, but the tales are also relevant and applicable in our Muggle world. Most Muggle fairy tales involve fantasy, and Beedle's tales are no exception. They are comparable in that both JKR's tales and the traditional fairy tales contain morals and messages intermixed with alluring fantasy. I think these tales could be recited to Muggle children just as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. are (though The Warlock's Hairy Heart is slightly grotesque). Although Beedle's tales are told from a more or less wizard's perspective, I think that approach would simply add to the magic and fascination of the tales by Muggle children.

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I really liked them. I definitely agree that Dumbledore's notes were the best bits. I loved the idea of Hogwarts trying to perform The Fountain of Fair Fortune as the Christmas panto and all the disasters that happened along the way.

I think the illustrations in the book were stunning.I had an idea J.K could draw but was not expecting the beautiful pictures that were in the book.

I thought the little note at the start of the book, 'Translated from the orginal runes by Hermione Granger', was a really nice touch as translating the book is something I could really see Hermione doing.

Also,am I the only one who could totally imagine Hermione reading these stories to Rose and Hugo? (I probably am!!! )

Re: The Tales of Beedle the Bard: General Thoughts

I finally got the chance to read it, and I liked them . Dumbledore's notes added to the stories and had me laughing out loud at times. As for the stories themselves, they added another dimension to the HP series overall.
