Call the Midwife

As Far as I know this is a new show that has just aired on the BBC. I absolutely love it. I come from an old family and my mother especially loves this show as it reminds her so much of her childhood.

I have just finished watching the fifth episode so far this show has tackled quite a few hard hitting issues surrounding child birth, including at one point kidnap. It also follows the lives of the midwifes themselves and along the way a bit of comedy. I must stress this is not a comedy show but as with all good dramas it has both happiness and sadness in it.

I was wondering what other people think of this show? Has anyone else seen this show? Do you think that the show has a future?

I suspect it does have a future - the viewing figures are amazing! It's doing better than Downton Abbey did ( according to Radio 5 Live) without all the hype...

This is an excellent series, combining warm-hearted drama with a real slice of social history.

And pretty graphic for its 8pm slot!

Re: Call the Midwife

Yeah we're gonna get a second series .

I have to admit when this was first advertised I didn't think much of it. I got it recommended by a friend and on her recommendation I started to watch the show from there it captured me. I then showed it to my mother and her friend who now also both love the show. I think this is one show that seames to have bloomed under word of moth rather than advertising.

Marander Hart in this show is a fantastic bit of casting IMO.

Re: Call the Midwife

I watched the last episode this week, although I hadn't seen the earlier ones, and enjoyed it. I must admit, I'm not wild about Miranda Hart as an actress (as opposed to as a comedian), but I thought Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan was amazing.

Re: Call the Midwife

I have seen Miranda Heart in this from the beginning, when she came in her character was quirky and funny and a bit of am out cast but she seams to warm to you so but the end you do see her as Chummy and not Miranda.

Re: Call the Midwife

Lets see if I can revive this thread as it is a fantastic TV show that does not get the credit to deserves. In the UK we are currently on season 3 and only 4 episodes in.

What do you think of the characters now after/during 3 seasons?
do you think the love stories of the main characters work?
Are there/Have there been any special guests that you are happy/unhappy with? Why?
Have you been happy/unhappy with any of the weekly/season long stories?

I look forward to hearing what people think.
