Re: Downton Abbey

Finally watched episodes 1 and 2 of the new Upstairs Downstairs.

I'm impressed. I really do enjoy this show. I'm interested in the time period and the happenings.

However, I am much more invested in the characters of Downton Abbey.

Re: Downton Abbey

I've decided to revive this thread since I just finished watching the first season in like 3 days and I'm obsessed! All of the characters (except Tom and Daisy, loathe them) are so interesting and exciting to watch.

Am I the only one rooting for Branson and Sybill? I also love Anna and Bates, but I think Bates it toying with Anna a little bit.

Of course, Maggie Smith is so wonderful in this, and she has the best lines. Some favs:

-"So stick that in your pipe and smoke it"
-"My maid is apparently leaving me to get married. How can she be so selfish?"

I can't wait for this show to return. From what I've seen, we're in for a few surprises.

Spoiler: show
Bates' wife is supposed to make an appearance. And there is going to be a wedding and a funeral.

Re: Downton Abbey

Loved this first time around! Very well written and filmed, I love a good period drama. They cast well and the 2nd season sounds like it will be just as good, if not better.

Hopefully this time around they won't lose a BAFTA to 'The only way is Essex'!

Has anyone seen the new promo? It looks amazing! I wish they were more precise about the air date though.

Can't wait! On wiki they are saying it will start September 18th and ends november 6th. I presume that's correct.

Re: Downton Abbey

I liked this show. I am glad it is coming back. The promo looks good. I wonder if they will kill off the father. That is sort of where i think it should lead. It would cause the conflict of inheritance as well as force the cousin to step up and decide to either take over the estate or not. Looking forward to it.

Re: Downton Abbey

I just watched the new episode. There seemed to be a very large time gap in there. Not very much seemed to happen in this episode so i hope we get more in the next one.

Re: Downton Abbey

I thought it was a very exciting series two opener. Mary broke my heart with her little pale face! Matthew moving on is the saddest thing ever. And still, he looked more at her than at his fiancée. But how dare he ask Mary to look after her? These two are sooooo blind.

Daisy kissed William!

And Branson confessed his love! It was a long time coming. I'm glad she refused to answer though. Sybil is progressive in her thoughts and deeds but she's also an earl's daughter. She knows that she would lose everything if she agreed to marry an Irish socialist chauffeur. I don't think he quite understands what he was asking of her.

Poor Bates. Poor Anna. But I do love to see Maria Doyle Kennedy on the show, so a part of me hopes that Mrs Bates will remain in the picture for a while.

Re: Downton Abbey

OK, I watched the first episode of the new series on Sunday night and now I understand why this show has such a devoted following.

Brilliant evocation of a lost way of life. And now that they're in the middle of WW1, huge social changes are on their way.

Michelle Dockery is gorgeous.

And Dame Maggie! How I love Dame Maggie. In anything.

The war scenes were very well done and very moving.

Re: Downton Abbey

I think the reason i feel like so little happen was because they just added more problems or sort of revisited the same old problems and there was no resolution with any of them. Matthew and Marry are still pretending that they are not going to end up together. Bates is still married and not with Anna. Sybil and Branson are still having their same issues of class. At least Sybil began to do something which was very nice to see. Dame Maggie and Matthew's mother are still arguing a bit though there was a moment of agreements.

I really liked this episode and enjoyed it. I just feel like the characters are all in the same place as they were before. At least for the most part.

Well, to be fair, they added lots of new things and characters and the series needs some continuity. Also, like Violet I am not fond of Greek drama where everything happens off stage. I would have been severely disappointed if Matthew and Mary had resolved their issues, Sybil and Branson had started dating and Mrs Crawley and Lady Grantham had buried the hatchet in-between series.

And now there is a war going on with most of the male cast put in a different setting, we have a few new characters with Lavinia and Ethel, Eva Bates, and Sir Carlisle next week.

Re: Downton Abbey

Oh i didn't want it to happen off stage, but i did think that something would happen in this episode. I still really enjoyed it. All i am saying is that they mostly reintroduced the characters which was fine. Is there only going to be two episodes?

There will be eight episodes and a Christmas special this season.

Re: Downton Abbey

Can someone what Mosley does in that scene when he tells the recruiting officer that he does have a lung condition. Is he lying to get out of war or does he really have a problem? I did not catch that... And I am kinda in love with the Irish chauffeur... feel soooo bad for him

Re: Downton Abbey

I am not sure. It felt like he didn't have the courage for it and thus wanted to get out of it. But it was hard to read.

It isn't the recruiting officer, it's the local doctor, no? And he's supposed to send medical recommendations about the local men to the recruitment office. Lady Grantham lied about William and Molesley because William's father and Molesley probably asked her to. Molesley is clearly terrified of fighting. After Mrs Crawley exposed Lady Grantham's intervention, he goes and sees the doctor to let him know that it was not against his wishes. Quite on the contrary. And the doctor isn't a cruel man. He knows Molesley and lets him get away with it, on the condition that he supports the war in some other way.

Re: Downton Abbey

Well if you hated Mary at first you have to like her quite a bit more after this episode. If anything she has come off as much more reasonable then the rest of her family. They all have their own issues and can be very unreasonable. She at least seems reasonable at this point even though she was rude in the first series.

I feel like the version of this show i have been watching has scenes missing from it. Because there are no commercials during it when it plays in the US and it is longer then it has been. I have no idea. There have just been some abrupt cuts that have made me wonder.

Re: Downton Abbey

I just watched episode 3 from series 2 and now my Downton Abbey marathon is complete.

I was hooked immediately, because I'm a sucker for costume drama; and then Matthew came along and was all dazzling and noble and kind, and I think his love story with Mary is completely believable, as they're both intelligent and inquisitive, and each other's equals. Anna and Mr. Bates' story is another huge asset; I sighed pretty much at every scene involving them - from the very start I could see why she would fall for him, I think I would have, too.

However, as the series progressed, and especially since the start of the second series, it resembles a soap opera more than the thoughtful period drama I took it to be at the beginning. All of the plot points and obstacles now seem to exist merely to create interpersonal drama between the characters, when they also served to move the larger plot forward before. Storylines are picked up and left off when they've exhausted their dramatic potential. I think it's become too heavy on the sensationalist plot twists and too light on the actual development of each story.

And something that annoys me less, but it's still irritating at times: I wish they'd actually engage with the serious issues they play with or not touch them at all. If they're going to incorporate a point about the human toll of war, do it properly instead of just scratching the surface and leaving at a few lines about everyone having lost someone and how everyone's scared, but it's their duty anyway. I just feel it's mostly fluff where it could have been something really provoking, and it vexes me. I find the resolutions of some conflicts very naive and Disney-esque, and the pronouncements on some issues extremely superficial and idealistic.

I guess I'd just like a little more turmoil, given proper time to pan out, more attention to separate potlines and the issues resulting thereof. To me, it seems like there's too much waste of good ideas and plot points in the hurried way in which everything is brought up and then abandoned.
