That's insane!!!

Do you guys know if it is any cheaper to download (legally) the audio books onto your mp3 player? Or is it about the same price as the cds?

Re: Audio Books

I do like audio books but I prefer reading by myself. Sometimes the person speaking doesn't convey the emotion in the sentence properly and I focus on how it should be said rather than what is going on in the story. I tend to not pay as much attention when I'm listening to the story; I'm a visual learner.

They're around the same price. Amazon sells Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for $47.25 and it's $49.99 on ITunes. (I suggest getting audio books off Amazon. DH is $50.37 opposed to Barnes & Noble's $79.95.)

I think that I prefer Amazon's $50.37.

Fortunately not. Although I do think that the high prices of audio books does have something to do with this as well as the smaller selection of audiobooks, so I do see the reasoining behind, unfortunate as it is.

Music actually costs more to record than what it costs to get one person to read a book in a recording.

Shame on the companies that see fit to exploit those in your position- because it is both a disincentive to reading, and an exploitation of those such as yourself- and those who are perhaps entirely blind and unable to read at all.

It is a shame. I know in the US though, there is a program for completely blind people to borrow audiobooks for free. I guess it is pretty convenient, although I think it is always nicer to own you own copy.

Oh, that is a much better price! Although still expensive, a nearly 30 dollar discount is not bad at all.

Yes, the idea of not being able to own them is somewhat lacking in encouragement, but overall, that's probably a good system. I don't think we have that here, to be honest. I just think it's up to each individual. They can borrow the audiobooks from the library, or they can buy them, but there's no set programme. And, I hasten to add, little enough help for them in selecting an audiobook at the library. On more than one occasion, I've gone in there and had to help out myself because others would/could not.

Re: Audio Books

I love audio books, especially if I'm sitting in a car for hundreds of kilometres... It gets a bit boring after the first hours if I don't have anything to read in (because we don't have good music in our car and we disagree about which CD or radio channel to listen to), and I get sick if I read in a car. An audio book interesting for the whole family is the perfect solution. But if I listen to audio books at home (when I do that, I'm usually in my room, sitting on my bed), I fell asleep if I don't have the book to read along...

Thanks for the information! I ordered DH last night and it should get here by tomorrow! Hopefully before I have to go to work!

I wish I could help, but I don't use iTunes anyway... I hope it's working better for you now, but try to come up with a backup plan. Did you pay more or less than you thought you would for the audiobooks?

Re: Audio Books

While I prefer reading I listen to audio books often usually when working on various projects at home. Jim Dale does an excellent job reading the Harry Potter series. I once read that he also recorded the entire infamous Mission Earth series by L. Ron Hubbard. I'll have to see if I can find them.

I know that's why I enjoy listening to them too. Sometimes I just don't have the time to read. Like now, I'm reading three books, and I still have another four to read. And recently I've become obsessed with DH and don't have the time to read it, so the audio book will come in great, and the UPS man just dropped them at my door!

Yes, Jim Dale does do a great job. I've listened to OOTP before and absolutely loved it!

Wow! They're so pretty! I love how they have the chapter pictures on the inside of the cd cases. And Harry on the discs and Voldemort. I also love how they made "The Flaw in the Plan" a big picture on the last case. Aw....Hagrid.......

Re: Audio Books

One thing I really like better about audio books is I am able to listen to them while doing something else. Obviously if I have free time I prefer reading much more, but when I'm doing something, homework, surfing the net, traveling (i can't read while moving) I really enjoy listening to audio books. I also find that I pick up things I've missed more when listening to audio books. When I read I find that I miss things (even when I've already read them multiple times). It also good to hear the story read out loud and hearing different names pronounced.

I try to listen to one chapter a night just before I go to bed. Sometimes I fall asleep during the chapter, but most of the time I end up listening to multiple chapters as I just can't seem to stop listening.

I love that! Just being able to chill out, turn off the light, close your eyes and have someone read to you in all those wonderful voices. Amazing stuff, I totally agree. . It's very relaxing, I always find!

Actually, if I turn off the light when I listen to audiobooks I don't fall asleep...

I love being read to. It reminds me of when I was a little girl, visiting Grandma and Grandpa, and sleep there, and them reading fairytales for me... Now noone wants to read loud for me, I'm to big they say. Audio books are saving my day!
