4. Ender's Game
5. Phantastes
6. Flowers for Algernon
7. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (or Clarke's short stories, can't decide!)

Kala--does your taste run to the tragic? I love the wit and fun of P&P but Jane Eyre is, at best, bittersweet and Flowers for Algernon struck me as tragic--am I just out in left field here?

I guess it kind of does, I've never really thought of it. The Giver's in that category to I suppose, and I almost added Brothers Karamazov . I've always loved books that can make me laugh and cry. Anything that's intense and honest maybe I'm just emo at heart
I just love Jane's character so much. I hate flighty characters! And Algernon I always thought it was amazing how he could see his descent in front of him, the way he handled it *shivers* such an interesting look at intelligence and the mind!

You mean Charley, right? Algernon's the mouse that got the same experimental treatment he did.

Re: Top 10 Fav Fiction Books

These are not the best book I've ever read (well, not all of them), but they're my books: the ones I re-read once and again when I don't have time to go to the library; the ones I take with me for a long journey on the train or the underground; the ones I can almost recite by heart. My friends, in a word.

So, in chronological order of reading:

1) The Three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas
2) The Hound of Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
3) Captain Alatriste books, by Arturo Pérez-Reverte
4) The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas
5) Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte
6) The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien
7) A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens
8) Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
9) Le Bossu, by Paul Féval
10) Dracula, by Bram Stoker

The Chronicles of Narnia should be in this list. But, as I began reading them at 13 and finished at 21 (they're not too popular in Spain, so I couldn't find the last book), I didn't know where to place them.

Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safron Foer
Ghostwritten by David Mitchell
The First Casualty by Ben Elton

I like the Black Magician trilogy, but it's hard for me to choose a favorite between the three.

It's interesting, I had never heard of The wheel of Time before I came to CoS. But I hear that a lot of people here like it. I may go check it out soon. I've also heard they are very long... longer than OotP.

Another Pendragon fan! I really love those books, I get everyone I meet to read them. It's my second favorite series besides HP.

I like them--they're good fun and a bit trippy, but they wouldn't go on my list of favorite series.

You took the words out of my mouth!

I noticed your number 3, by the way, MmeBergerac: Captain Alatriste by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. I must read this: I saw the movie, starring Viggo Mortensen, and was very impressed.

Here are mine: all of them close friends

1) The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien (my all-time number one)
2) The Silmarillion – J.R.R. Tolkien (my second number one)
3) Brideshead Revisited – Evelyn Waugh (lyrical, bittersweet, unforgettable)
4) Cold Mountain – Charles Frazier (I absolutely adore this book and couldn’t put it down. It also made me cry. A rarity, that.)
5) Persuasion – Jane Austen (my favourite Austen love story)
6) Jane Eyre – Charlotte Brontë (my favourite Brontë love story)
7) Possession – A.S. Byatt (a great big gorgeous chocolate box of a novel)
8) Till We Have Faces – C.S. Lewis (I love Lewis, and this is his finest work of fiction, although Perelandra should also be on my top ten, really)
9) The Secret Life of Bees – Sue Monk Kidd (because she writes like an angel)
10) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – J.K Rowling (just because )

hardly anyone ever knows this book, but I absolutely love it! It's the sort I think I could read over and over and see something new every time. Of course Perelandra is amazing as well!

Re: Top 10 Fav Fiction Books

These seems like a good thread to get ideas on what to read next. My top ten are in no order at all.

1. Harry Potter series.
2. Tom's Midnight Garden by Philipa Pearce
3. The Awakening by Angela Elwell Hunt
4. A Walk to Remember Nicholas Sparks
5. Baby-Sitters Club Series (I've been reading this series since I was 7 [1989] and it's like a long-term best friend that I'll have til I die) by Ann M. Martin
6. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
7. Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
8. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (surprisingly, I really love this one and I haven't read anything else in the series) by C.S. Lewis
9. Freaky Friday (surprisingly, I never owned this book. I moved around a lot and every year at a new school I would check this book out) by Mary Rodgers
10. Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares
