Re: Monty Python

To think that the show was almost called It's... and the troupe had no name. Of course the composition of the cast was also coincidental. They'd all worked together in various combinations but it could as easily have been, say, Tim Brooke-Taylor instead of Eric Idle.

Re: Monty Python

I know... . It seems dramatic, but I think it's true to say that comedy history would be totally different without Python. I just.. can't imagine it any other way!!

Re: Monty Python

Well, take out any significant troupe or comedian and it would be vastly different as comedy is evolutionary and British comedy has some pretty clear lines of evolution.

I honestly couldn't eat dinner, I was giggling so hard.
Cleese apparently hated being asked to do the Silly Walks, because he doesn't like repeating his work (which is why he left Flying Circus after the 3rd Season).

Re: Monty Python

Python became an exception to the rule that comedy works best when it's new. When they toured the US in the 1970s they found themselves performing sketches that were the best part of a decade old.

Re: Monty Python

I was telling my mom that I was starting to watch this and all of a sudden she started to sing, "spam spam spam spam spam spam spam" I was cracking up. Has anyone seen the skit where they do the Silly Job Interview? It's hilarious.

It's true. A lot of their earlier work was truly the best- but I think that's much the same with lots of comedy these days. Comedians seem to come and go pretty fast unless they keep fresh material coming- but they are all founded and revered according to their earliest good work, against which their new material is always measured. So I think it went the same with Python.

Interesting! I hadn't known that at all. I take it then, that he was just caught up in the moment on the show and decided, for the fun of it, to try it again, just to test the waters and see if he could.

I think he almost did himself an injury!!

[after slicing one of the Black Knight's arms off]
King Arthur: Now stand aside, worthy adversary.
Black Knight: 'Tis but a scratch.
King Arthur: A scratch? Your arm's off.
Black Knight: No it isn't.
King Arthur: What's that, then?
Black Knight: [after a pause] I've had worse.
King Arthur: You liar.
Black Knight: Come on ya pansy.

Re: Monty Python

I love Monty Python! My brother and I were raised watching their TV shows and movies. I love the French guards in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. "I blow my nose at you, you so-called Arthur king. You and all your English kinnnnniggits!"
Gallahad: "What a strange person."
King Arthur: "Now look here, my good-"
French guard: "I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough water. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"

Re: Monty Python

Ahh... Monty Python! I love the Holy Grail and The Life of Brain! I have also seen many skits; The Ministry of Silly Walks, Mr. Hilter, The Funniest Joke in the World, ect!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Centurion: What's this, then? "Romanes eunt domus"? People called Romanes, they go, the house?
Brian: It says, "Romans go home. "
Centurion: No it doesn't ! What's the latin for "Roman"? Come on, come on !
Brian: Er, "Romanus" !
Centurion: Vocative plural of "Romanus" is?
Brian: Er, er, "Romani" !
Centurion: [Writes "Romani" over Brian's graffiti] "Eunt"? What is "eunt"? Conjugate the verb, "to go" !
Brian: Er, "Ire". Er, "eo", "is", "it", "imus", "itis", "eunt".
Centurion: So, "eunt" is...?
Brian: Third person plural present indicative, "they go".
Centurion: But, "Romans, go home" is an order. So you must use...?
[He twists Brian's ear]
Brian: Aaagh ! The imperative !
Centurion: Which is...?
Brian: Aaaagh ! Er, er, "i" !
Centurion: How many Romans?
Brian: Aaaaagh ! Plural, plural, er, "ite" !
Centurion: [Writes "ite"] "Domus"? Nominative? "Go home" is motion towards, isn't it?
Brian: Dative !
[the Centurion holds a sword to his throat]
Brian: Aaagh ! Not the dative, not the dative ! Er, er, accusative, "Domum" !
Centurion: But "Domus" takes the locative, which is...?
Brian: Er, "Domum" !
Centurion: [Writes "Domum"] Understand? Now, write it out a hundred times.
Brian: Yes sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.
Centurion: Hail Caesar ! And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.

You can hardly blame them. Flying Circus was 40 years ago and all have moved on even if their fans haven't.

Re: Monty Python

The man with a tape recorder up his nose is my favorite.
Because I'm random and stupid like that xD
But other favorites of mine are the Exploding Penguin and The Ministry of Silly Walks.

As per the Holy Grail...

I'm still partial to the Spanish Inquisition. It's just so random and awesome.

Re: Monty Python

My favourite bit of randomness has to be the Fish Slapping Dance.

I also love Spiny Norman, Argument Clinic, Self Defence Class, Silly Walks, Conrad Poohs and his Dancing Teeth, Cheese Shop......bah I could go on and on.

Edit - I forgot Wuthering Heights in Semaphore Code! and Flying Lesson!

Re: Monty Python

I grew up watching MP, And still love it. I had two friends in Highschool that could repeat almost every single line from any episode or movie. (Faulty Towers too) They would play off each other for hours, and have everyone in stitches.
I have to agree with Mad Druid. The fish slapping dance kills me everytime I see it!!

"Penguins don't fly..........they swim under the icy waters of Antaaaaaaaaartica"

"It is now time for the penguin on top of you televison set to explode"

BOOM!

"How'd he know that???"

It's from Exploding penguin. I had to watch it again just now. The penguin part starts about 2min 30 sec into it.
