Re: Things You Just Don't Get In Math Class

Things you just don't get in math class....that would be MATH period.. I never understood math when I was in school (about a thousand years ago) and I understand it even less now that my girls are in school (they are in the second grade).

They recently brought home math progress reports where one thing the teacher said was that they would benefit from practicing decomposing numbers. Talk about scratching your head. All I could visualize was an open grave and seeing a partially formed number (decomposed)... Many thanks to chparadise for setting me straight. Who knew that it had to do with breaking a number down into "place value"...ex: 153 is 1 hundred, 5 tens and 3 ones.

I also hate word problems...they might as well be in another language. Ex..
Train A left New York enroute to Florida traveling at 68 mph,
Train B left New York enroute to Kentucky traveling at 43 mph..
How many cows did they pass along the way?

Don't even get me started on Geometry (curls up in a fetal position and sucks her thumb)!

I admire all of you who understand math and all the different forms of math. You guys are the bomb!

Re: Things You Just Don't Get In Math Class

I am having so much trouble with trig right now! There's something about it that makes it un-understandable. You think that you're doing everything right but you're almost always making one tiny mistake, (this is all made worse by my horrible math teacher) because all the problems on tests are one step up from homework, where you're supposed to put together a puzzle of theories, basically. I'm so sad; I had over 98% in Algebra II and Geometry and over 96% in 1st quarter Pre-Calc, and now I have a C+. AND we have an impossible test that our teacher designs to shatter any last shreds of confidence we have left. And to think, our teacher said just yesterday "You know, I feel like we aren't having as much fun this quarter". Wonder why.

Re: Things You Just Don't Get In Math Class

Hmm I wonder if anyone here can help...

I've got my advanced geography exam tomorrow and as part of it we need to know some basic maths statistical tests focussing on the Chi Squared Test, pearson's product moment correlation coefficient and spearmans rank correlation coefficient. Does anyone know the advantages and disadvantages of using these techniques because I've got a feeling they can ask that but I really don't know. Things like whether they only work with a certain amount or type of data or anything I could use to get marks!!

Trig is the only maths that I could ever do.

I never got the whole all real numbers and the domain and range stuff. I never liked that stuff in math class.

Re: Things You Just Don't Get In Math Class

Maths was the worst subject at school for me D:
I HATED it.I didn't understand it. It's like a foreign language.
I was rubbish at multipication, division, percentages, fractions etc.
Now i'm at college, i still need extra help for maths cos there is some math related in psychology. It totally sucks.

Re: Things You Just Don't Get In Math Class

Math was my horror subject in university. No matter how much I practised, I always made the same stupid mistakes. I barely passed my second attempt. When you're at home and take your time to go to each step slowly, when you check if you're right inbetween, then it works out. But when you're at the exam, with a time limit and when you have to calculate everything by hand without the chance to triple check your answers. Then you're screwed.
Who in this world needs to calculate by hand. When I do math in my job later then I am using calculators and excel sheets. When there's something I don't trust, then it's my ability to do math right.

Anyway, I recommend watching numberphile on YouTube. It's a channel about math related stuff. Like I said I'm a complete fail, when it comes to math, but this channel is awesome. And for that matter watch signingbanana as well. It's the channel of Dr. James Grime. Math professor at Cambridge University. He's great and funny and cute. There are other channels like ViHart, which are cool to watch as well.
