What obscure singer(s) none's heard of do you like?

Like the title says, what obscure singers that probably no one under 65 will know these days do you like? Of course, there might be the occasional person under 65 who likes said songs!

As for me, the obscure singer, or who I think is probably pretty obscure now except maybe in Ireland, is John McCormack. I first "discovered" this Irish singer when I went onto a WW1 website and downloaded a few vintage audios of genuine songs from the WW1 era (or, in some cases, pre-WW1). Even if the sound quality was clearly not 2009AD quality, his voice blew me away when first I heard it! But I'd be really surprised if anyone under 65, let alone in my 20s, have heard of him (unless he's well-known enough in Ireland that more people under 65 do know of him...anyone from Ireland able to confirm this?)

Well, she's not vintage, but it seems that I am the only one in this city who knows Emilie Autumn...

Rivers Cuomo, although he's also the lead singer in Wee[my key which is to the left of x is broken, sorry]er. I love his "Alone" albums.

Vera Lynn also comes to mind--bet you 5 dollars no one else in their twenties know of or like her...

*Leaves the 5 dollars in thread, assured no one will claim it, and intending to spend it on Subway anyway *

I know who she is. Many do, actually.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of Imogen Heap. No idea how many people listen to her, though.

I wouldn't call her an obscure singer. But maybe that is because I'm a big musical fan.

Well I'm from Ireland and I've never heard of him but I'm only 18.....just asked my Mam and she's never heard of him either!

I don't really listen to obscure music but I like some bands that noone here has heard of like Augustana, Faber Drive, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus but they might be well known somewhere else!

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is quite popular at my place.

People should start listening to Tall Dwarfs! Or like, Rick Wray or something. Fantastic men.

Oh, and if anyone's interested in vintage music or really obscure artists you should check out the Antique Phonograph Music Program @ WFMU. They have really, really neat stuff from the 1900s and music like that. Brilliant show.

I'm unsure of how popular he really is, but I'm a big big fan of Luke Pickett. His music is really the only acoustic music I'm a fan of.

I also enjoy Backseat Goodbye, and hardly anyone I know has heard of him unless it was by my reference.

Re: What obscure singer(s) none's heard of do you like?

Well, the obscure musicians that I like aren't really that old. The obscure musicians I like that actually are signed are Ben Folds and Regina Spektor. But I also like a lot of bands and singers that aren't signed--I've found them through YouTube. I like the Wizard Rock bands Ministry of Magic, Parselmouths, and Moaning Myrtles and individual singers I like are Lauren Fairweather and Hank Green.

I love Imogen Heap. I got into her by listening to the soundtrack for Garden State, and the song she did when she was with Frou Frou was amazing. Clear The Area, Getting Scared, and Hide and Seek are some of my favorites.

I love Kelly Deal from Kelly Deal 5000. She was also in the band The Breeders with her twin sister Kim.

I also love That Dog, which is really more of a So. Cali band, but even people in So. Cali have never heard of them. They were briefly on an episode of Daria though.

I LOVE Gjallarhorn, a Finnish world/folk music band. I've never come across anyone who has heard of them.

Re: What obscure singer(s) none's heard of do you like?

I actually prefer obscure singers and groups to mainstream artists. The obcure people often have as much (if not more) vocal talent than the overly autotuned stars. Their music also has more heart to it. Most big name artists don't sing what they want to sing or what they are best at singing. They sing what some producer tells them to sing to make more money. Music is about feeling. How am I supposed to feel it if the person singing it doesn't feel it? Sadly I seem to be in the minority. Otherwise the mainstream sellouts wouldn't be mainstream and some of the obscure people wouldn't be so obscure.

My favorite group is probably the Tobasco Donkeys, a folk group made up of several current and former staff members of a Boy Scout camp I used to work at in the wilderness of northern New Mexico. Great voices and its amazing what some of them can do on an acoustic guitar or fiddle. True mountain music.

I really love the Mystery Jets, but somehow no one seems to know them. I saw them as a support act to The Kooks in Amsterdam a couple of years back, and I thought they were just so much better than the main act. I still can't believe that even with 3 really good albums out, they still seem to be relatively unknown. (At least they are here, I don't know about other places.)

Anyone who has listened to Pink Floyd's The Wall has at least heard of her, and probably googled the name as well.

Lydia Pense of Cold Blood has, or at least had, an awesome voice.
