Misheard lyrics

Has anyone else had the humiliating experience of seeing the lyrics of their favourite song written down and realising that they've been singing completely the wrong words along to the track when listening (in my case, for over 20 years..sometimes loudly...in a public place)?

Some famous mishearings (technically known as mondegreens) are:

"I was sick and tired of everything, when I called you last night from Tesco [real words: called you last night from Glasgow]" (ABBA)

"Excuse me while I kiss this guy [real words: kiss the sky]" (Jimi Hendrix)

What are the funniest mishearings you have come across?

Re: Misheard lyrics

Depeche Mode. Misheard:

Pleasures remain
Soldiers burping
Words are meaningless and forgettable

actual lyrics:

Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless and forgettable.

Re: Misheard lyrics

Oh what I really hate is when cd booklets with lyrics are misprinted I bought a cd the other day and read the lyrics and thought 'that doesn't sound right!' so I listened/read at the same time and the words were defiantly wrong. Makes learning the right lyrics that much harder

and that, my friend, is why i listen to music at night, so i learn the lyrics. but then again, sometimes the lyrics i make up sound better than the song....

Owner of a Lonely Heart by the band YES is a good one

Owner of a lonely fart, owner of a lonely fart...
much better than an owner of a big wet fart
owner of a lonely faaarrrtt!

(real lyrics)
owner of a lonely heart, owner of a lonely heart
much better than an owner of a broken heart
owner of a lonely heeeaaarrrttt!

Re: Misheard lyrics

Too many... I'll have to dig them up and post them here...

I have one...

I used to think that part of the lyrics from 'Billie Jean' from Michael Jackson... went like this... 'Billie Jean is not my brother...' ( don't ask me why I thought that it sounded that way... I was pretty young at the time )

The real lyric... 'Billie Jean is not my lover...'

Another one...

The real lyric -- 'seeing red again...'

What I thought it was... 'sick rages...' Now how does one go and have those?

Seeing Red Again -- Chevelle

My mom thought that the lyric... 'we're an american band...' from the song of the same name by Grand Funk Railroad... was 'we're an american man...' -- don't ask me why she did though...

I ended up correcting her on that one...

I have one from back when I was still in high school ...

From the song 'I'm Blue by Effiel 65'

What I thought... 'I'm blue and I'm in need of a guy' 'I'm blue and I'm in need of some pie' 'I'm blue and I like to eat flies' -- don't ask -- this song has many interpretations ...

What it really was... 'I'm blue -- ba-da-dee-ba-da-di...'

I got another one...

What I heard: 'There's an old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic engine...' Just what in the heck a 'tonic engine' is -- I don't know ...

The real lyric: 'There's an old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin...'

Billy Joel -- Piano Man

Re: Misheard lyrics

From Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks

I heard: It's got what it takes to make a mutton out of control

Actual words: It's got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home.

And there's a line in a David Sylvian song which has become quite famous on his fan forums, as everyone seems to hear "The Netherlands is at back of every place you look". It's actually "Benevolence is at back..."

Re: Misheard lyrics

There is this song from U2.

It sounds like they're singing this: Shamou the mysterious whale.

But they really sing like this: She moves in mysterious ways

And there is also misheard lyrics in "sunday bloody sunday" also by U2 but in that it sounds like they're singing something else in swedish.

Re: Misheard lyrics

My favorite is from the smashing pumpkins song "Disarm"

"Sodomy is such a part of you"
(actual words: inside of me and such a part of you)

From ABBA's Gimme Gimme Gimme:

I heard: "Take me to the doctor's at the break of the day"

Real words: "Take me through the darkness til the break of the day"

Re: Misheard lyrics

A couple from my mom ... one from 'Wanted Dead or Alive' by Bon Jovi...

Instead of... 'I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride, and I'm wanted dead or alive...'

She thought it was... 'I'm a cowboy, on a stale horse I ride (just how a horse could be stale... I don't know ...), and I'm wanted dead or alive...'

And another one... this one from 'Billie Jean' by Michael Jackson...

Instead of... 'the kid is not my son...'

My mom thought it was... 'this chair is not my size...'

A couple of other misheard lyrics that I've heard...

'Summer of 69' -- Bryan Adams

'We were young and restless and needed 2 and (or in) 1...' ( don't ask - it doesn't make any real sense to me either... ) <-- what I thought it was

'We were young and restless and needed to unwind...' <-- the real lyric

'With Open Arms' -- Journey

'I come to you with elephant arms...' (just what in the heck 'elephant arms' are, I have no clue ...) <-- what I thought it was

'I come to you with open arms...' <-- the real lyric

Re: Misheard lyrics

Oh I do love misheard lyrics, some of them are too funny! These are great. Here are some of mine:

From "Blitskrieg Bop" by the Ramones:
I heard "Let's kick bum" instead of "Blitzkrieg Bop"

From "So Says I" by The Shins:
I heard "Santa's back to get jolly, boys"
The real lyrics were "...that sent us back to the drawing board"

My family has a history of hearing lyrics wrong, so I guess it runs in the family.

My uncle thought that "Big old jet airliner" was "big old Jed had to line up" and that "Do the Hustle!" was "Chew their hats off!"

Re: Misheard lyrics

From the song Hometown Glory by Adele, I thought the lyrics to the chorus were:

How the war undoes my world, how the war undoes my world...
when it's actually:
Are the wonders of my world, are the wonders of my world...
to be honest, I like the lyrics I thought I heard better.

Oh, and from this ones Panic! at the Disco song, Time to Dance, I thought the lyrics to the chorus, at first, were:
House of composure, instead of Have some composure.

From "If you ever stopped loving me" - Montgomery Gentry

What I heard: My home is back in Houstonland.
Actual lyrics: My old man's back hand used to land

Re: Misheard lyrics

I used to think
You never call me when your sober....
was
You're never happy when your sober
it's funny because the song's title is Call Me When Your Sober and I also knew that bit of the lyrics really well when I heard it the first time

Re: Misheard lyrics

In Bowling for Soups/Sr-71's song 1985, I heard the song as "There was You-tube and Blondie" while the actual song goes as "Bruce Springsteen, Madonna / Way before Nirvana / There was U2 and Blondie /And music still on MTV"

LOL when I first heard it I was like, what? Youtube's not from 1985!

From "Blinded by the Light" (Manfred Mann's version):

Actual lyric: Revved up like a deuce

My sister used to think that "Ivory Madonna" by UB40 was "I'm a prima donna". Also, my uncle used to think that Boy George was singing "I'm a chameleon" (real words: "karma chameleon").
