Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I just realized how much voice affects me. I absolutely hated Rihanna's version of Umbrella but I listened to marie digby's version and I just fell in love with the song.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

The voice and the lyrics. If the person has a horrible voice, I dont care if the video is awesome, if he/she cant sing, there's no point in watching it.
The lyrics because the song has to mean something. I find it pointless to listen to a song, if you dont listen to the lyrics. Even if the song is in Spanish or German, I will look up the translation, if it's not perfect, it's close enough for me to get the gist of the song.
But that's all my opnion........

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

Melody and voice are the most important to me. I don't usually care too much what a song is saying and can usually enjoy a song if it has a beat I like. I also really like good voices or expressive voices.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I think Lyrics, because I have a tendancy of, even before I brought a record, researching the lyrics beforehand to see if I could relate to it, because I guess it's the most important thing to me, voice and melody can grow on me, and alot of things grow on me, music can grow on you, but lyrics have to either relate to you, or not, but i am not that finicky about it being "meaningful" or whatever, just if I can relate to it alot, or being good fun like If U Seek Amy

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I really like the voice and the lyrics. I like the voice, because I love it when I can hear the amount of emotion an artist puts into a song. For example, Katy Perry's "Thinking of You" I love because 1) you can almost hear the amout of emotion she is putting into the song, and 2) because this song reminds me of New Moon! The lyrics matter to me, because I like to see if the song has a meaning behind it. It's kind of like a puzzle for me. Bands like The Fray and Nickelback have meanings behind their songs that I like to see if I can figure out what they are. I also like the lyrics, because sometimes they are very meaningful and powerful to me.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

For me, lyrics are almost everything. No matter how much I like the melody or the sound of the voice singing it, if they lyrics are stupid, ugly, disturbing or totally antithetical to what I believe, I can't like the song.

A prime example is "Imagine," by John Lennon. It's a beautiful song, and the original recording is beautifully rendered - but I can't stand that song, because I disagree profoundly with the lyrics.

Of course, beautiful lyrics set to jolting music and sung by someone with a horrendously ugly voice also makes for a terrible song that I can't stand to listen to. But I probably wouldn't listen to it long enough to know that I like the lyrics, anyway.

And I don't watch music videos, so that isn't a factor.

But lyrics have a profound impact on whether or not I like a song. I find it difficult to listen to songs whose lyrics I can't understand, too; I'll go beserk trying to figure out a garbled line in a song.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

The lyrics are most important to me for a song, to me it expresses do much with just a few choice words. Like listening to old Pink Floyd songs (though drugs might've helped ), the things they say feel true, like in their song Time.
The type of lyrics that I like best are ones that can be dissected and have several different meanings. Also ones that have hidden meanings, a very crude yet fitting example of a song with a hidden meaning (I do not like this song, but I think that some people will know what I mean when I say that this song has a 'hidden' meaning - If U Seek Amy by Britney Spears.

The song is very... crude but is a good example of a song with double meaning

Second is the voice. There are several artists that have great songs but have voices that I cannot tolerate.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I'd have to say lyrics and vocals are tied for first.. I absolutely cannot listen to a song if I don't like the lyrics; which is half of the reason why I'm so picky with my music in the first place. I like songs that have lyrics with meaning.. or rather mean something to me.

And vocals are kind of obvious. There's a lot of musicians who may have decent lyrics but their voices are just awful.

As for the music video itself, yeah I like to watch them sometimes (usually I order them free on my tv when I'm bored and nothing else is on), but they don't change my opinion on songs that I enjoy. I like to look at the creativity aspect, yes, but if the video isn't good I don't automatically disregard the song.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I can't say that the video matters much to me. It doesn't have an effect on wether I like the song or not. I think it's pretty cool if a music video is entertaining, or makes me sad like "Concrete Angel". I song I really like may have a really stupid video, but it doesn't change my view on the song.
v Basically, I totally agree with the last part of your post!

What about bass line, effects, guitar riffs, arrangements...? For me it's a combination of everything but I usually pay a great deal of attention to the lyrics, because I don't know that much about music.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

I like bands that tend to use unusual instruments- I can't play an instrument worth a darn, but when I listen to a song many times over I try to pick out each instrument and follow it through the song. Lyrics are definitely important, I like challenging ones that tend to leave things open to interpretation, or nonsensical stuff (like The New Pornographers.....I don't think anyone can figure out what they're talking about). And voice is definitely a plus- technically correct/perfect singing I couldn't care less about, but a voice that suits the style of music and lyrics and sings it with passion. A technically proficient singer can hit all the notes they like, but if there's nothing behind it, I'm not interested in listening to them. Enthusiasm goes a long way.

It depends.
But, I prefer the lyrics.
And, the voice and the melody comes on second place.

Lyrics and music are most important to me. I can have a hard time listening to songs that don't have a decently put together sound or if the song has lyrics that I can't realte to/find interesting/or have fun listening to.

Voice and melody don't mean a huge deal to me, s'long as the song has good lyrics and a decent beat i don't give a darn what the singer sounds like.

Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?
All these things matter. But the most important thing is the melody, if it sucks, the whole song sucks. The second... the voice. I love men and women with low voices, kind of dark and mysterious, A little coarse. Then comes the lyrics. I like songs that have something to say, but if they don't, it's fine too. Music videos mean nothing to me.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

For me it would be the melody. The voice is also very important but since I listen to a lot of instrumental music in which nobody sings I place the Melody Higher. Lyrics are not that important as long as it sounds good. But of course it is always better if the text has any meaning or any deep. It's not so fun when the text is just random words and sentences which has nothing to do with each other. Music videos is not important at all. Sure it's fun when a song has a good video that you can watch but it's not like you will see it every time you listen to the song.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

Both lyrics and melody. To me, a song is intended, at least, to be a work of art that combines the two mediums of words and music, so you can't really discount either one. In a well-written song, the lyrics are supported by the music, and the music is supported by the lyrics -- neither can stand alone. Personally, as a big poetry freak and not much of a music person, I tend to focus more on lyrics, but I don't think they're any more important than the melody.

For me it's the voice and melody. Music videos mean nothing to me, and I don't care as much about the lyrics as I do with voice and melody.

A song can be great but not have stellar lyrics or something one can relate to. I've heard of songs that are are strange and pointless, but that's the way it's supposed to be like that because that may reflect how the composer felt at that point. My only exception is if the song is degrading in a way that I can't tolerate it, i.e. if it is overwhelmingly racist or sexist.

Lyrics and Voice. the voice should be able to carry the emotion(s) of the lyrics.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

Lyrics make all the difference for me..

I don't need it to like a song, but it's even better if i can relate to the lyrics. Even if i can't relate 100%, i tend to get stuck on a few lines that will make fall in love with a song.

Like.. Amy Winehouse & 'You Know I'm No Good'. "you say what did you do with him today, and sniff me out like i was tanqueray'. that's awesome.

And it ruins everything when the lyrics are overly cheesy or common..

About the melody i don't know... I get annoyed when sth is a bit too obvious. I hate it when you can feel the chorus coming like a jingle or whatever..

I love very smooth voices... Like Leslie Feist or Roy Orbison.

A bit of everything, i guess.

Re: Lyrics, Video, Voice or Melody?

The most important thing to me is the lyrics. Sure, I can enjoy songs without good lyrics and a cool melody, but the vast majority of the time, I like the songs with good lyrics far more than the ones with a really good melody.

Songs I like for the melody come and go quicker, but ones with good lyrics stick with me. I end up listening to them a lot more.
