Re: Fantasy band line-ups

A few other bands I like (Nine Inch Nails, for example) go through musicians like they're going out of fashion too. Some past combination of thier members would be ideal, but they never have it perfect all together IMO.
Though having said that, I generally hate it when bands I like change their line-ups

I think it depends on the band. A true band, where each member has an artistic say and is making a hefty (if not entirely equal) contribution, should be wary about changing its line-up. But many bands are actually one or two dominant musicians and his/her minions (not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that) and I think they're the ones that go through musicians like socks.

Another thing is that, as a fan, I tend to choose fantasy line-ups entirely on the basis of what the members can contribute musically, but in RL personalities also come into play and the best musicians may not necessarily create the best combinations. I can think of more than one band where a member who seemed to be fairly useless musically left, and the band quickly folded - while to the fans that band member didn't seem to be fulfilling any useful purpose, they were actually the social glue holding the others together, smoothing bruised egos and preventing one faction within the band from killing the other.

Oh I agree (but I refer to them as 'band dictatorships' which is a category a lot of the bands I like fall into) but in cases like that I don't care so much. One or two people really control the sound of the band and that changes very little with different people coming in and out. In cases like that though there are still some line-ups I'd prefer over others because they still have their own flair (and I figure they must be doing something the 'dictator' likes in order to make it in) and style to a degree.

That's a good point, I hadn't considered that. Quite a few bands I like have had great musical chemistry but the personalitys clash terribly and a member gets out.
It seems so strange sometimes when a band seems to work so well together and then someone gets out and it changes the sound entirely.

Re: Fantasy band line-ups

Hmm...

Lead guitar: John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Drums: Aquiles Priester (Angra) or Neil Peart (Rush)
Vocals: Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) or Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
Keyboard: Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater)
Rhythm Guitars: Marcus Siepen (Blind Guardian); Zacky Vengeance (Avenged Sevenfold)
Bass: John Myung (Dream Theater)

I would also probably want an orchestra playing with them. My top choice would be the London Symphony Orchestra.

Re: Fantasy band line-ups

I was talking about this today with a friend. If anyone knows who any of these first few musicians are (besides Reznor), you're my new best friend

For a dark electro band:
Vocals: Andy LaPlegua (Combichrist)
Guitar: Jules Hodgson (KMFDM)
Synth/keys/programming: Thomas Rainer (Nachtmahr)
Bass: Tim Skold (SKOLD)
Drums: Bone W Machine (Deathstars)

I'd love their album to be produced by Trent Reznor too.

Also, a re-think of one of my old lists for a more mainstream heavy rock group:

Vocals: Till Lindemann (Rammstein)
Guitar: John 5 (soloist + Rob Zombie)
Guitar: Robin Finck (former Nine Inch Nails + Guns N Roses)
Bass: Jeordie White (Marilyn Manson)
Drums: Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
