"Identity"
Spoiler: show
All the characters are different personalities in the mind of a psycopath

That was a real surprise.

Yeah no kidding! What a fun movie.

The Saw movies all have crazy surprise endings too...the first one was awesome!

The Uninvited: Wow, never saw it coming.

Spoiler: show
I mean, you think the father's girlfriend really is the one who did it. But the main character actually being the one who did it. And the fact that the sister was dead all along? Just... WOW!

AGREED. I watched that on vacation a couple of weeks ago, and my cousin said there was a surprise twist at the end, but I would NEVER think of it as that! And it wasn't a stupid ending, like some movies do just to get a twist in. It actually made sense, eerily enough. It was pretty scary. But yeah, it was just a crazy-good twist that had me shocked for a few days.

I watched it when I was a bit younger, but I always thought the Others had a really good surprise ending.
Spoiler: show
Turns out Nicole Kidman and her kids ARE the "others"; they're the ghost.

Yeah, it took me completely by surprise, though a couple of my friends said they were seeing it coming. Of course, it's easy to say that a posteriori.

Agreed I was completely in shock when the movie was over.

It took me several days for the shock to wear off A lot of people don't like the movie - but I love it just because of the twists at the end. I never saw them coming.

Re: Plot twists in movies you never saw coming?

For me the ending of pretty much every Shyamalan movie had a completely unexpected ending. He's the master of plot twists if you ask me. 'The Others' was very suprising as well, I was totally taken aback.

Fight Club. Because I hadn't read the book and no one gave it away.

Memento. That was a good one.

I'd say The Sixth Sense but my mom told me as I was watching the movie for the first time,
Spoiler: show
"You know Bruce Willis is dead right?"

And I actually guessed the twist in the first Saw, because my friend was like "You'll NEVER guess who it is!" so I guessed and I was right, haha.

yes, that one had a surprise twist too. I hadn't read the book either, so I was like, "Wait...WHAT?" hahaha, but that's a great movie. I love Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter.

I watched the Mist, and I have to say it was pretty decent until the twisted ending. Then I thought it was just disturbing, wrong, and horrible.
Spoiler: show
The main character ends up killing his own son and two elderly people, thinking they were going to die anyways in the hands of the monster in the mist. There are only 3 bullets, and he kills everyone but himself. Then, you find out that the monster is gone, and the noises coming from the mist were actually rescue tanks and military men. He killed them for no reason.

The ending was just seriously wrong. I couldn't even comprehend why that happened. It was just...urgh. but that's just what I thought.

Yeah, I saw The Mist in theaters, and I was just like "...what?" It was so wrong. Apparently Stephen King liked it better than his own ending (I didn't read it so I don't know how it ended. Probably not as messed up though).

I thought it was a brilliant ending. Totally morbid and depressing, but brilliant in the context of that film. The whole thing is about fear and what it does to people. (Actually I think the movie would've been better with fewer monsters throughout--would've more effectively made this point). But that ending is the ultimate example of what fear can drive a rational person to do. As soon as
Spoiler: show
the kid made the dad promise that he would not let the monsters get him I knew the dad would keep the promise even if it meant killing his own child. Kill his child quickly and painlessly or watch the child and the rest of his friends ripped apart by monsters. It was a horrible decision, and he thought he was doing the noble thing by using the last of the bullets on them.
But the whole point is what fear does to people--how it makes us act in horrifying ways and do things we'd never consider doing otherwise. And the irony of the ending just drives that home--that we shouldn't let fear overcome us.

See, I knew
Spoiler: show
he was still alive because in one of the trailers it showed him breaking the bat sign. And that hadn't happened in the movie yet, so I figured he must still be alive.
But I guess, if I hadn't seen the trailer, I would've been surprised.

I knew about that twist before seeing the movie, but if I hadn't known I would have figured it was some shot or scene they were going to use but decided it didn't work in context. I see that all the time in trailers and movies, so I wouldn't have been surprised.

Ah. Well guess I get suprised easily then . I figured that part took place earlier on in the film.

Ah, interesting topic.

Fight Club
Spoiler: show
Brad Pitt's character being Edward Norton's character. As in being the same person.

I Am Legend
Spoiler: show
Other people besides Will Smith's character, and there being an isolated place with people that are fine.

Primal Fear (1996)

Spoiler: show

Yeah, it was!

I saw this just the other day. My first thought was actually that John Cusack's character was the murderer and that he'd undergone plastic surgery or something to alter his face. Then a bit further in I sorta figured out what was going on...but "THE identity" still shocked me!

Spoiler: show

I was afraid I'd have nightmares of the little boy standing over me with a knife or something but far as I know, I didn't. However, I rarely remember my dreams, so perhaps I did was fortunate enough to not realize it. Funnily enough though, my aunt fell out of bed the night we watched this film and she wasn't sure how or why it happened...I wonder if it was a coincidence or a result of nightmares
