I agree with everyone who The Sixth Sense.
Just thinking about that movie gives me the chills.
Plus, I remember how stupid I felt after realizing what just happened. DOH!

To name an M. Night Shyamalan movie that's not The Sixth Sense, I really didn't see the last scene of Unbreakable coming ('though I felt like I should have in retrospect).

The one that comes to mind first is in the Prestige, when we figure out what's really happening during Hugh Jackman's magic trick, and when we find out how the other magician (I can't recall who plays him at the moment) was doing his trick.

I think several people have already mentioned thte big plot twist in The Dark Knight, but there are two other minor twists that really surprised me:

One:
Spoiler: show
that Lt Jim Gordon got killed (gasp of horror).

Two:
Spoiler: show
that he wasn't actually dead (sigh of relief).

Best post I've read all day!!

I agree that those were really great ones though. Small, but really well executed. Some more, weird and subtle, but there nonetheless..

American Psycho
Spoiler: show
Did he, or didn't he, main, pervert and kill all those people? Will we ever know?!

Citizen Kane
Spoiler: show
Finally finding out to what "Rosebud" referred... Iconic.

Can't think of any more right now.. ooh, other than Shrek.

That one. Even though all the clues are there, I absolutely did not see it coming. That's why it's such a good twist.

No one have mentioned Memento yet it seems, I though that one was quite ingenious. And tragic.

The ending to the movie, Mr. Brooks...

Spoiler: show
The fact that his own daughter turned out to be a serial killer just like him... . That one certainly threw me for a loop and chilled my own blood...

I think my favourite twists are Fight Club and The Sixth Sense...

Not sure if it's actually a 'twist' exactly but the ending of The Butterfly Effect was pretty good I thought.

Yea the one from the Sixth Sense was definitely a doozy... I didn't see it coming.

Yeah, I didn't see that one coming, either. Although, when I thought about it, there were subtle, escalating clues throughout that
Spoiler: show
it was all in his head. Like the shootout with the cops where his bullets blow up two police cars. That felt like false and like it belonged to a different movie. I should have foreseen the twist then.

Ah but was it?... Can you ever really be sure?... That's why I love the movie, the choice of whether it happened or not is truly yours. Brilliant.

Yeah, that is pretty cool. I've decided that it was. What do you think? Or do you see both sides?

Re: Plot twists in movies you never saw coming?

I saw the ending to American Psycho differently, maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but it seemed like yes he did do the killings, but a satire of the attitude of the 80's yuppies being so oblivious that even when it's confessed and put right in their faces they still didn't see.

I'll really have to rewatch it. I'm confused. American Psycho 2 seemed to say that, yes, he was a killer.

I'd like to say that I didn't see the plot twists coming in the Matrix - but as I didn't understand the plot anyway, who knows what were twists and what were not

I see both sides. Having read the book and seen the film and studied them both in great detail, I see both sides. The film gives a lot more direct inference of confusion, the "did it happen" syndrome, as it were. The book gives the gist of that and does let you make your own decision, but it's not as set in stone throughout the entire thing.

It's Bateman's precision in noticing outrageously mundane things, followed by his disorganised killing style, that provides both social commentary and backdrop to the confusion.

I don't think I can decide whether he did or didn't. The part with my heart begs to think he didn't, but my head screeches that of course he did, he's a maniac and that was the entire premise of the book, and indeed the film. In terms of twists, it's one of the biggest ones in modern literature, and Ellis certainly showed no boundaries with what he wrote.

For anyone interested, the film is a very clean cut affair, when compared to the book. It makes it harder for me to judge, knowing the entire backstory, the bits not involved in the film. Twist wise, it's horribly difficult to decide what you really believe or not, and I doubt that will change for me unless I ever go back to it in future times.

Which I hope I won't, quite frankly. There were nightmares, and I'm not kidding.

I haven't seen that, so I was just going on the first film. Not sure I want to see the second one now that I've seen the first.

Yeah, I haven't read the book, either. And frankly, I think I'm way too squeamish to read it. I can sit with that kind of movie for a couple of hours and be done with it. But a book takes so much longer to get through and has so much more depth than can ever be put in a film. I don't want to delve into this story any deeper.

Re: Plot twists in movies you never saw coming?

I'm throwing in my two cents on American Psycho, since freelantzer was kind enough to let me know this discussion was happening (cheers! ):

I don't think he did it. Two reasons: One, it's just plain ambiguous and confusing at the end. Two:
Spoiler: show
I had my doubts when he yelled at the female bartender in the very beginning when she wouldn't take his drink ticket. If you've ever been face-to-face with a bartender, especially in New York, believe me, they will NOT let that kind of back-talk slide. She should've turned around and shredded him, and the fact that she didn't immediately made me wonder if he said anything to her out loud. Also, if you watch closely (and this is the cinematography geek in me coming out), he's yelling in a mirror. Mirrors are used a *lot* in films to portray something other than what's really there.

Then there's the brief shot of him gulping down some kind of medication before he kills Paul Allen - again, while looking in a mirror. That leaves the entire following scene open for debate as far as credibility.

Also, I wonder about the title of the movie. You assume that 'psycho' refers to the fact that he's a killing machine and totally devoid of emotion, but does it? It could mean any kind of psychological problem. Maybe he's delusional, paranoid, depressed - or all of the above. And then there are the sketches that Jean finds in his datebook. The first time we see a sketch is when he's absently drawing on the paper tablecloth at his lunch with Evelyn. The sketch is an exact replica of the girl he's supposedly killed with a chainsaw in the previous scene. What does that mean? Why is he thinking of her then? My view is that he never killed anyone, but imagined that whole scenario in his head while he was actually at lunch with Evelyn - this also explains his coworkers vouching for his alibi at the time when he thought he was killing Paul Allen - and then drew the final result, after which he's back in the 'present,' with Evelyn.

*phew* Okay, I'm done for now, haha. But yeah, I don't think he did it.

Re: Plot twists in movies you never saw coming?

One of the endings I never saw coming was in Beyond Borders with Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen...
Spoiler: show
Angelina Jolie dies of a land mine and not Clive Owen, who is shot in the shoulder twice and has been starved for days :|
At the beginning of the movie, Angelina Jolie is sitting at her piano playing and she starts narrating, then it goes back in time, and at the end of the movie Clive Owen comes to visit her and there's someone sitting at the piano playing but it's her daughter!
