Re: Best song ever written?

As far as music and how it is written and how the dynamics of the vocals build and soar...I would have to choose Miserere by Gregorio Allegri. It is just one beautiful piece of music that never fails to entrance me with the way the harmonies all work together and support each other without overpowering any one section. An a capella piece, and it is one of the best classical pieces ever, in my opinion.

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Back In Black - AC/DC
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Imagine - John Lennon
How To Save a Life - The Fray

It's alright ma( I'm only bleeding) Bob Dylan
Unravel Bjork

Re: Best song ever written?

I came on here a while ago and listed a bunch of songs, but never really decided on anything. Well recently my mom had to pick her 2 favorite songs for something or another at work, and she had a ton of difficulty picking just two. She finally decided on "River" by Joni Mitchell, and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills & Nash. That got me thinking, and finally I remembered one that I know will always be my top song: "Into the West" by Annie Lennox.

Re: Best song ever written?

Hallelujah, most definitely. Cohen's words are gorgeous and Jeff Buckley's version of it is fantastic. So very, very emotional and powerful, I love it.

My next choice would have to be Piano Man by Billy Joel. I love the words and the melody, and the simplicity of the song. It hasn't been fudged around with on computers, it's just the song. The same goes for Hallelujah. You can actually hear the singer singing, not a voice that has been greatly altered by technology. Which is good for someone like me who isn't a fan of most chart music.

Finally, I love Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked. I think it was written by Stephen Schwartz. To me it's the message in this song which is the most important thing, seen in this section of the song:

Quote:
Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by
The rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes
And leap...

It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down
I find the words and music of it really, really uplifting.

Re: Best song ever written?

I doubt that anyone will ever completely agree on the best song ever written, because there will always be a song that touches someone in a way that doesn't affect anyone else.

For me, I've always loved Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) since the first time I've heard it, and for me it will always be my all-time favourite song. It's a song that really embodies the moment, that reminds you to enjoy everything cos it won't last forever.

Re: Best song ever written?

Not the best song ever written, but I think it's a really, really good song that I can relate to on many levels. Matchbook Romance's Tiger Lily. I really love the lyrics and the simplicity of the melody

Hmm...Favorites, favorites...
- I'm a Rover, particularly as sung by Great Big Sea
- With Cat-Like Tread from Pirates of Penzance
- Bonny Portmore by Loreena McKennitt
None of these are the best songs ever, but they're definitely among my favorites.
