Re: Best song ever written?

By "song" do you mean "popular song" i.e. any form of non-formal music so including folk, pop, rock, blues, jazz etc or "piece of music".

Because if you mean "piece of music" I haven't got a clue, there is too much.

But if you mean "song" then I would say Hurt by Trent Reznor. The Johnny Cash cover of it is almost as good, but I prefer the original.

Re: Best song ever written?

My FAVORITE songs at the moment are:

Avril Lavigne 'Innocence'
Nickleback 'How You Remind Me'
and Miley Cyrus 'I Miss You', I really like, but there's absolutely no way I'd call any of them best songs ever written.

Oasis 'Don't Look Back In Anger' was the first song that I learnt that wasn't a nursery rhyme and I've always loved that song too.

Re: Best song ever written?

According to Rolling Stone magazine the three greatest songs of all time are:

1. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
2. Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones)
3. Imagine (John Lennon)

Not that they're the final word or anything, I just thought I'd throw that out.

Definitely agree with that one. I adore playing it on the piano, and no matter how simple it may be, it's incredibly beautiful. I think it says a lot when a song can do so much with so few notes.

And I love your signature, by the way!

Thanks. I also adore Imagine's stripped-down simplicity. Alot of the times overproduction can stilt a song's truth and emotion and Lennon avoided that with the simple arrangment.

Re: Best song ever written?

Not certain if anything in the past 15-20 years can compare to earlier songs.

Just off the cuff, I'd say many Beatles' songs, American Pie by Don McLean and Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin can easily qualify.

Midnight, you should check out my Song Remakes thread. We're discussing (well, me and one other person) American Pie there.

Re: Best song ever written?

By "greatest songs ever written" do you mean favorite? I have some favorites but I would by no means say they are the greatest songs ever written.

My two favorites are "Walkin' on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves and
"Come on Eileen" by Dexes Midnight Runners. They are fun pick me up songs and I just can't stay in a bad mood when I hear them.

I think one of the greatest songs....I'll just go within my lifetime....
Peter Gabriel - In your eyes.

(but maybe that's just b/c John Cusack is my favorite actor of all time!)

Quite easily almost all of Lifehouse songs win the prize for me. But if I had to pick, I would say Blind by Lifehouse. Who said a song can be interpreted only one way?

Re: Best song ever written?

Hmmm... Dazed and Confused live by Led Zeppelin on How the West was Won may be one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. Jimmy Page playing an improvisational solo in the span of 15-17 minutes shows how much of a guitar god he is, although I may be a little bit biased
A studio recording would probably have to go to Stairway to Heaven, I still get a shiver down my spine whenever I listen to it

How To Save A Life- The Fray

I have no idea why, it's just been my favorite for some time. Oh wait, I think it had something to do with some of my favorite fictional characters dying (many of them in HP). Bit pathetic, but there you have it.

Re: Best song ever written?

There are several great songs and not just one though I dare say classic wins there on a long run. Just because they are loved since centuries and are still timeless, unbeatable.

Ode to Joy by Beethoven.
Lots and lots of stuff by Mozart, Bach, Wagner etc etc too.

Though "Music" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" aren't bad either. If somebody loves music, there never can be just one great song just like there is never just one emotion.

Re: Best song ever written?

Woah, it's really difficult to choose! Ok, let's see...

Life On Mars? - David Bowie
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
Let It Be - Beatles
Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
Perfect Day - Lou Reed
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Mother - Pink Floyd
November Rain - Guns n' Roses
Working Class Hero - Lennon

Ok, I'll stop now, because I could go on for hours!
