Re: Best song ever written?

I agree with RollingStone magazine on this one: Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan.

Okay, I think most of us agree that "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey is one of the best songs ever written. It's a classic. Even if I wasn't even born when that song came out, I still love it. Thank gosh that my dad has good taste in music. (hehe.)
I also think "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls is one of the best songs ever written, in my opinion. The lyrics are great, the music is just plain gorgeous, and I never get tired of listening to it.

As far as Journey goes, I like "The Wheel In The Sky." I think it's called that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"Open Arms" by Journey is good, too.
But overall, their Greatest Hits album is amazing.

One of the best "pop" songs ever written is Like A Prayer by Madonna. It's such a majestic song.

Re: Best song ever written?

Someone mentioned Hallelujah, Jeff Buckley's version, and I have to agree. It has to be my favourite song. It's like a trembling arch over an expanse of water. It can make anyone feel in love, or just feel something, and it doesn't fade as soon as the song is over, it carries you through the day. Amazingly powerful.

Another great one that I listen to all the time is The One You Love by Rufus Wainwright. It's very evocative, love without added sugar but not exactly bitter. Not to mention Rufus's voice, which is mindblowing!

If I had to choose one song for the 90s, other than Hallelujah, I wouldn't go for the good but overplayed Smells Like Teen Spirit. I'd go for I Think I'm Paranoid from Garbage. It's It describes the way a lot of people felt back then, with images of glamour that were unattainable and a very subtle tranformation of grunge into a new wave of punk in the underground. This is not a song, it's an anthem, and it's a pity it doesn't get the airplay it deserves anymore.

In my opinion, the best song ever is Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Leonard Cohen wrote the song, but Jeff completely made it his own. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
I'd probably say that too

Re: Best song ever written?

Hmm thats a very hard decision to make, I think there is a difference between those songs which are really good and that I love to listen to, things like Green Day and the Killers, and those which are truly classics and contenders for the best ever. I'd say a few would be

Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen
Let it be- The Beatles
Stairway to Heaven- Led Zeppelin
Freebird- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Blowing in the Wind- Bob Dylan

Re: Best song ever written?

Its very hard to pick a fav. song, especially cuz I have a new fav. song every other day, but I'm going to say, anything written by Rob Thomas. I think he's just amazing. He's had lots of co-writers though. He wrote 'Disease' with a guy from Rolling Stones, can't remember his name though. And the Santana song 'Smooth', was written and preformed by non other than Rob Thomas. Has anyone heard the new song 'How Far We've Come'? It's really good, and the music video is very political, and good. I love it!

But I like a lot of other stuff too. Someone said 'Imagine' by John Lennon, and I would have to agree. It's a really inspiring song. Pretty much all the Beatles songs are good like that.

Jealous Guy - John Lennon: most humblest love song ever written
Run - Snow Patrol: just gives you hope
Michael - Franz Ferdinand: just the sheer audacity of men singing about dancing with men
Bullets - Editors: goosebump song

Re: Best song ever written?

I agree about Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah, its a classic. MOst Leonard Cohen songs are. I love "Everybody Knows", sung by Rufus Wainwright, also a Leonard Cohen creation.

Other favs (can't pick one, its impossible)

I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
Scarborough Fair/Canticle - Simon and Garfunkle
Blue - Joni Mitchell
Hurt - Johnny Cash

And the list could go on
