Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

All of my friends think I should publish. None of my teachers have said that I should be published right to my face, but two years ago in English, we had to keep a journal to hand in once a week. We could write about anything. Sometimes I would write about things that I did that weekend or plans for the next weekend, but most of the time I would copy things down out of my draft of the book I'm writing, and I believe that she had hinted once or twice in her comments that she thought I could be a published author one day.

Last year, my teacher taught us how to write four types of papers, and I got top grade on 3/4 of them. So, I think that is a good sign for my writing careers. Some of my friends even think I should get a job as a writer. I dont think I would mind much.

PS: Welcome, Scottishness!

My mom has suggested it... lol, I know, that means a lot, but as I'm homeschooled and you asked about teachers...

Lol, but yeah, all my friend have suggested it.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

I am an alright writer, but I like to do it anyways. I could work on a few things though. I don't remember whether or not anyone told me I should write or not (shrugs). I don't think I could be fully happy in my future life if it doesn't have to deal with my acting or writing, so I am working more on my book this summer (if I could figure this problem I am facing with it now!) and will hope for the best.

oh, and as for the 1st person thing:

First person is pretty cool. I like the fact how we know what the main character is thinking right on the spot since they are telling the story. I am currently reading this book which is told in third person, and I love it, I admire the author's technique with it.

Third person is a bit easier to write though.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

I think first person is far too easy, personally. Besides that, though, what I hate about it most is that it often lacks a detail and a certain amount of poetry and literacy about the words, and when it does not lack such things it feels unnatural because it does not suit the character. For example, I can't for the life of me remember what it was, but I once read a story which was written in present tense from the viewpoint of a seven-year-old. This child had an impossibly adult vocabulary, understanding, and outlook on what was going on in the story, and I hated it. I would have loved the story quite a bit if it were written in third person. I think it's possible to use first person in certain cases, but for the most part I'm extremely fond of the third person narrator being privy to what choice characters are feeling and thinking.

One of the reasons I'm writing in first is because I can really get into someone's head. Disadvantage is that I can't kill said person, but that is what third person's for, right?

That's what I like about first person. I love being able to delve right into the head of the character and really explore. I don't think detail necessarily gets lost when you write that way, it's just that if you suddenly get stuck for how to describe something, you don't have to.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

I love first person when you have a very unusual character. If you've ever read "curious incident of the dog in the night time" you'll know what I'm talking about, the narrative is in the form of someone with aspergurs and its just so gripping.

I don't think 1st person would work for Harry however because despite the dead parents, being a wizard, prophecy and everything else...he is surprisingly normal.

If you've not read "the curious incident of the dog in the night time" I recomend you do it's a very different book.

Well, I think first person stories are incredible if it is done right. Example, the book I am reading now is told perfectly and I cannot picture it in third person. It depends what your'e writing about I think. And if you have a good author to set a decent perspective in First person. Another fair example would probably be To Kill a Mockingbird.

i think different books suit different views
i mean has anyone read the turbulent term of tyke tyler
it needed to be first person
but some others need to be third person

You can get into someone's head in third person, too, but you also have the advantage of having an outsider's view, and you don't have to stick to one character if you don't want to. First person has to be really, really good before I even want to bother with it.

Actually, with third person, you can get into a character's head just as much as you can with first person, depending on how it's done.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

i stupidly started with a large series of books and its taking me ages to plan everything out, get characters names, historys, etc
i should have started out with something smaller first

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

Well, you don’t have to finish what you started right away. Sometimes I find it helps when I’ve overwhelmed myself to write something else; like a fanfiction or a short story or a poem, and ignore the story for a day.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

yeah but if i dont start it soon ill never finish it
ive got little time as it is these days what with exams next week, football, etc.
plus characters names are a pain any name i come up with is either terrible or been used by someone and hence will be associated with them

Better to never finish it than to rush it.

I think it's best to start with something you really want to write, rather than something 'easy'. Allow yourself to have fun with it.
