Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

Well, I'm a bit preoccupied the next few weeks with a few parties to plan and attend, and also (I'll be honest) a boy, so my attention has been drawn away from my stories right now, but I know it will only last a little while.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

Exams ended for me today to, but seeing as I'm only in the 7th grade, I have to stay the whole day. The good news is that every class is shortened by 2/3 days. I did the math. We get out 2 hours early, 2/6=1/3; 1-1/3=2/3. We have 2/3 days. I get home a little after twelve. I've been spending all my free time on the computer writing little by little. I've got one chapter done now. Woo! The title of mine is actually really run-of-the-mill. It's ordinary. It's 'Race Against Time'. The only thing unique about it is that the R is the Rx pharmacy symbol thingy.
The first three paragraphs just about sum it up, so:

I walked down the hall into what was left of the living room. There was a gaping hole in the ceiling that I needed to fix when it got warmer outside. Light emanated from the hole and from the few scattered candles that flickered in the draft. I’ve lost track of how long the world has been like this, but if I had to guess, I’d say about 5 years. It doesn’t sound very long, but if you’re living every day of your life in this hell, it seems like an eternity.
I should explain a little more. There’s a war going on. A huge one. Every country is involved some way or another. It started at the assassination of the President. The assassination of my father. That was the last straw. My mother, to protect my sister and me, brought us to hiding here in New Jersey. Since then, we’ve just been doing what we can to survive. Then my mother past away about 3 years ago. We had a rough time with that. I was 18, my sister was about 15. We were able to get along on our own, but it’s a scary thing to do in a world like this. It got even scarier when my sister got sick last year.
She can’t get better without medicine, but in a world like this, things like that are as likely as peace. It’s almost impossible to get unless you break into the vault where some supplies are being kept for emergency use. The vault was in Washington D.C. But I didn’t care about that; I was going to get that medicine for my sister…

***this whole thing is completely 100% fictional***

Well, now when I’d normally be doing school I seem to be going out with friends or to the store or something and end up staying out much later than I would stay at school…

Omgosh, yes school just got out today, and that is my summer. It consists of laying around watching tv and going on the computer

Happens quite a lot actually. Clive Cussler and his kid, Dirk, team up a lot for the newer Dirk Pitt adventures, and Cussler also teams up with various people for the spinoffs of said series.

He he he. I just covered myself for the first book's more dodgy moments. The advantages of writing in first person - You can just say that the character doesn't really write things down much in a very descriptive way unless necessary, (and let's face iot, Anthropology reports aren't going to win awards for the most descriptive piece of the year are they?)

That is the exact reason I love writing in first person so much! The freedom to be vague!

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

allthough its easier to write first person, i dont like using it as it sorta restricts you to one persons view points
you cant really talk about what someone else is thinking

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

I really find first person to be really boring when I'm writing it, and often when I'm reading it too. I much prefer to write in third person.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

Second person would be this:

You go up and knock on the door and wait for her to answer. When she does, she ushers you into the house and invites you to sit down. You do so, noticing her collection of cat figurines on the coffee table as you do so.

It's not really used much. I do know that it's banned on fanfiction.net.

It's really hard for me to write in first person. I don't mind reading it, but I prefer writing in third.

Re: Any writers trying to get published? v.5

I like first person way more than third person.
I was actually trying to write a book with my friends for teens. It was cool until my friend said it was depressing and we tossed her out of the writing group. After that everything went downhill because she's my best friend and a great writer as well as me. So, I went after her and she was mad so I quit. I dunno if it's still going. Pretty sure it isn't because I haven't talked to the other two girls in about a month.
And in school, we had to write a whole fantasy story in second person. It was miserable. but then the essay we wrote had to sort of be from a celebrity's point of view except you had to write it in third person. It was really weird. I kept messing up and ended up with a terrible grade. At least my fantasy story was aced, as usual.
Do any of your teachers/past teachers go on about how your writing is so good and how you should publish. Mine do and all I do is say "I don't think I'm that great" and then ignore the rest.
But I'm actually writing a book to (well I hope) be published. It's a fantasy about two sets of twins. A girl set, a boy set. They are in the same family and the boys are younger by like two years. It's sort of a high level book, not good for little kids. 13+ sort of. Unless you like over your head things. I really enjoy reading it to myself and my sister thinks that it will be good for a fantasy. I can give a summary some other time when I'm not half as lazy. and so far it's only 120 or so pages.
