Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

I was hugely privileged to see him in an Ibsen play, in Dublin, October 2010. (Treacle Tartlet was with me! )

He was a hugely gifted actor, one of Britain's greats, and a modest, lovely person. This is a great loss.

Thinking of his long-term partner, Rima, and his family.

That was my instinctive reaction too.

We were very lucky to see him in Dublin. It is a memory that will stay with me forever.

"But the play we edited together, My Name is Rachel Corrie, had a greater impact than we ever imagined, with two runs at the Royal Court, a West End transfer, and productions around the world, from New York to Haifa. And on the opening night we each admitted that we couldn’t have done justice to Rachel’s words without the other. We’d been a partnership, we agreed, however crotchety. A friendship was born.

And that was lucky for me, because Alan had a great gift for friendship. He was devoted to a large number of people and would somehow always manage to visit their obscure art exhibition, or phone them at 2am when he heard they were in deep trouble, or attend their opening night even when, as we now know, he was already seriously ill. He threw dinners; he ordered every dessert on the menu if you couldn’t decide."

Hans Gruber, Sheriff of Nottingham, Colonel Brandon, Harry in Love Actually and Snape.

So many different characters, so many movies tied to my childhood and so on.

It´s very sad. He really did a terrific job with Snape, all his roles really.

God, I'm in shock. I'm still reeling from the deaths of Natalie Cole and David Bowie. This is too much.

I in state of shock & disbelieve. Alan always look so healthy & young for his age, who could have thought that we going to lose him so soon......

That's also what Daniel Radcliffe said on Google+ - that he always went to his performances when he didn't have to. It's such an enormous loss of talent and by all accounts, a wonderful person. It's unfair and sad.

My introduction to him was as Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest. I was hooked immediately.

When I saw the first Harry Potter movie, I had not yet read the books, but I remember about midway through the movie having it dawn on me that the guy from Galaxy Quest was playing the guy they thought was trying to steal the Stone.

After that, I sought him out in Die Hard. Eventually when I got to CoS, fans gave me ideas for other Rickman performances to see. Colonel Brandon was a big favorite.

Rickman was really a terrific actor and great to the fans. I remember seeing a video clip of a visit he paid to a kids event at a New York library. He was just great with the kids and was happy to answer all their questions. (Except, of course, HP spoilers).

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

“Look...at...me..." he whispered. The green eyes found the black, but after a second, something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank, and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more.”

A VERY young Alan (skip to 1:17:20, it's 1 brief scene but there is dialogue): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqZTN594JQw

So sad to lose him still in his prime. I'm glad we have such a large body of his work recorded to remember him by. Take a well deserved bow, Mr. Rickman. Here's to happy remembrances of a man generous with his gifts.
