Re: His Dark Material

You should try again! I fell asleep during it a few times when I first read it, but it does get better

Re: His Dark Material

Wow!!! I love Northern Lights!! I have only just finished, but I have only been able to read a page a day for most of it. I'm just far too busy. But I sat down on saturday and started again from the start. I love it!! My favourite character is Iorek, I'm not sure if that's how you spell it. But that bear is cool!! I also like Farder Coram and John Faa! I can't wait to read the other books! But I have a question, if you had the choice, what would you want your daemon to take the shape of? I'd have a tiger, or lion. And after reading the book, I actually want a daemon! Anyone else felt the same after reading it? How cool would that be!

Yep, did it look like I was rambling incessantly at no-one in particular? I do that at times.

Re: His Dark Material

I love these books! They are so clever and beautifully written. I can't decide which is my favourite out of Northern Lights and The Amber Spyglass! I think the first one is easier to get 'into' but the third one is so strange and amazing! Oh and I love the idea of daemons, I really want one! And I can't wait for the film! It could be fantastic!

Re: His Dark Material

npickup, I am currently reading The Subtle Knife, and at my reading pace, expect to be done sometime tomorrow.

I tried to buy both the sequels yesterday but for some reason they didn't have The Amber Spyglass in either Waterstones or WHSmith.

I don't like the fact that in The Subtle Knive the chapters are quite big, so they seem to drag meaning I haven't been able to get into it as easily.

Spoiler: show
I have a feeling, and it maybe extremely obvious but the object the Grummun knows of is the knife. Lee will take it to Lyra and Will, but really what it does, I have no idea.

I put that in Spoiler tags incase someone is coming on here to see whether reading the books is recommended as I did, and wouldn't want the story to be spoilt.

They only way I'll know for sure, is to continue reading!

Re: His Dark Material

I absolutely love those books. Pullman has an art with language few fantasy writers achieve. But I cannot be thrilled about them becoming a film. I feel like so many fantasy books are made into films that it becomes an expectation that to write a good fantasy book or series, it must be something that could be or will be a film. What does this say about the future of fantasy books?

I read a really interesting article about Pullman a few weeks ago and he talked about how so many "adult" fiction books lose all sense of Story so that there is almost nothing to them ("If they could write books without stories they would. Sometimes they do.") and I have to admire his ability to capture that ever so important Story.

Re: His Dark Material

Ohhh stop you're all making me want to read the books again, and I can't because I'm living far, far away in Spain! Oh well, home next week!

I can't remember which book of the three I prefer, but I know that the ending of the Amber Spyglass made me cry more than any other book has. It's so beautifully written.

I agree with Jezzer about the spoiler thing, as there seem to be lots of people on here who are currently reading or want to read the series.

Anyway, can't wait to get home and dig my HDM series out again!

I can't pretend I've ever noticed chapter lengths for any reason other than remembering where I am when I stopped reading, and seeing as I'm not a big fan of stopping reading mid-story, no matter how long it is, I can't remember too much!

Spoiler: show
Obviously I'm not going to mention owt more about the plot because that'll wreck it for you, but my take on The Subtle Knife is that it's better once you've read the Spyglass. To make a tenuous footballing analogy out of it, it's like Michael Carrick - you don't notice it much at the time, but without it, the ball never gets out your own half and your strikers don't have much to play with. I hope you're a football fan, or else that'll have sounded like more random rubbish...
