Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

The ones I've read are *bolded* with asteriks around.
  • *The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien* (Never finished it, though - got to the return to the Shire and put it down)
  • *1984 by George Orwell*
  • *Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen* (Love, love, love it)
  • *The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck*
  • *To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee*
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • *Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte* (Didn't like it much)
  • A Passage to India by E.M. Forster
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  • *Hamlet by William Shakespeare*
  • A Bend in the River by V.S. Naipaul
  • *The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fritzgerald* (One of my all time favorite books)
  • *The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger* (Didin't like it)
  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
  • *Brave New World by Aldous Huxley*
  • The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
  • Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
  • The Bible by Various
  • *The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer* (Excerpts only)
  • Ulysses by James Joyce
  • The Quite American by Graham Greene
  • Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
  • Money by Martin Amis
  • *The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling*
  • *Moby Dick by Herman Melville* (Excerpts only)
  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  • *His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman* (Interesting but I generally don't like "love conquers all!" stories, especially when the people falling in love are, you know, like twelve years old)
  • Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol
  • Rebecca by Daphine du Maurier
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
  • On the Road by Jack Keruac
  • *Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad* (I think...)
  • The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope
  • The Outsider by Albert Camus
  • The Colour Purple by Alice Walker <-- Saw the movie, does that count?
  • Life of Pi by Yann Martel
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
  • Man Without Women by Ernest Hemingway
  • *Gulliver's Travels by Johnathan Swift*
  • *A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens*
  • Huckelberry Finn by Mark Twain
  • Robbison Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
  • Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
  • The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
  • Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
  • The Divine Comedy by Alighieri Dante
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

I've read more of them than I thought I had...

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

Asterisks mark the books I've read. Those I liked best are in blue.

I've also corrected some typos, like "The Quiet (not "Quite") American" and Jack Kerouac.
  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien*
  • 1984 by George Orwell*
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen*
  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck*
  • To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee*

  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger*
  • The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley*
  • The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank *
  • Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes *
  • The Bible by Various (just read parts of this)
  • The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
  • Ulysses by James Joyce
  • The Quiet American by Graham Greene*
  • Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
  • Money by Martin Amis
  • The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling*
  • Moby Dick by Herman Melville
  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame*
  • His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman

  • Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
  • The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope

  • Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
  • The Divine Comedy by Alighieri Dante
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde*

I wonder why "The Count of Monte Cristo is listed, but not "The Three Musketeers" and its two sequels?

I would also recommend some other books but I guess that should go into a different thread.
