Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

^ I just finished Jane Eyre and I loved it way more than I thought I would! I thought it would be sort of boring, but I was pleasantly surprised

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

I've not read Hamlet, so the only thing I know of it is the Simpsons retelling hehe

I have read other Shakespeare though

Romeo and Juliet- I thought it was utterly boring, I'm afraid
Macbeth- I loved- fighting and Scotland
Othello- beautiful. Made me cry

  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding*
  • The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank

  • The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
  • Moby Dick by Herman Melville
  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol

  • Gulliver's Travels by Johnathan Swift

I have read these ones. I will definitely have to look at this list later when I'm looking for a new book to read

*I have read some (leaning towards most), but not all of these three. Not a big fan of Frankenstein or Lord of the Flies and we didn't have to read all of The Canterbury Tales for class.

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien (only The Hobbit and the Return of the King)
To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee (assigned reading, really sad)
Lord of the Flies by William Golding (assigned reading, but still really good)
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (pretty funny)
The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
Ulysses by James Joyce (parts of)
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (would I be on this site if I haven't)
His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman (loovveedd it!)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol (amazing)
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Huckelberry Finn by Mark Twain
Robbison Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

I have 38 books to read before I die. How lovely.

Harry Potter, of course, is the best, but I basically loved all of the others I've read on the list too.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

What I've read from the original list:

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Hamlet by William Shakespeare
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fritzgerald
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Bible
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol
Rebecca by Daphine du Maurier
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Huckelberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas

I'm not sure I can come up with 50 books to read before I, you, or anyone dies. Let me see:

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
1984 by George Orwell
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolken

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Bible
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Death of a Salesman by Tennessee Williams
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
The War of the Worlds by HG Wells
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

It seems I cannot come up with 50 titles.

(I have not read all the books on my list, so I have some work to do. Yes, some of these are plays. Bolded titles are from my and the original list in the original post)

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

* The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
* Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
* The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
* Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
* Lord of the Flies by William Golding
* Hamlet by William Shakespeare (do I get extra credit for reading things many times?)
* The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
* The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank (regrettably, yes...)
* The Bible by Various
* The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer (some -- not the whole thing)
* The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (I think so...)
* The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham
* Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol
* Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
* The Outsider by Albert Camus
* Frankenstein by Mary Shelley *
* Gulliver's Travels by Johnathan Swift
* A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens*
* Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

War and Peace isn't on this list? That's a shame. I wouldn't say everybody should read it, but I'd recommend it over some of the books on this list.

I really have some catching up to do. *snort* I own few of these books myself, but I haven't read them.

Kind of a sad list Got some catching up to do. The 2 I've bolded (except HP which I assume all people here have read ) are ones that I bolded are the ones that I HIGHLY recommend, they are at the top of my list of favorite books.

But there are several books here on the list that I'll be reading next year in English, so at least I'll be adding a few more books to this short list.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

Here's what I've read from that list. 22 out of 50 isn't brilliant.

The ones in bold are particular favourites.

• The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
• 1984 by George Orwell
• Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
• Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
• Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
• A Passage to India by E.M. Forster
• Lord of the Flies by William Golding
• Hamlet by William Shakespeare*
• The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
• The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (it made quite an impression on me at the time)
• The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
• Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
• The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank (excerpts )
• The Bible by Various
• The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
• Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
• The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

• The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
• His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
• Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
• Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
• Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift (at university ... I find 18th century English literature very hard going )

There's no Dickens on my list because A Christmas Carol is one of the few Dickens novels I haven't read!

I prefer Macbeth to Hamlet.

There are a lot of books on the original list I should have read and feel embarrassed that I haven't.

I used to, but after reading Hamlet several times over I've realized how amazing and beautiful it is. I still love Macbeth, though.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

If I were to make a list of books to read before you die, I'd probably add

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Macbeth by William Shakespeare
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
A Streetcar Name Desire by Tennessee Williams
A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (or anything else Sherlock )

Along with a lot of stuff in the original list.

Quote:

I love Macbeth too, and think it's definitely worth a read. But I think I prefer Hamlet because of the many, many ways it can still be interpreted. I love how people are still, to this day, arguing about the play! I love looking at all the different POVs and coming up with and discovering new ideas. It's one of the things I love most about literature.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

The list has some great books, but has avoided all controversy and put in some awful spur of the moment choices. I mean, The Curious Incident was terrible, as is Birdsong. Also, why include The Bible and omit the Quran, and why include Kerouac in favour of Burroughs. Why Tolstoy over Dostoyevsky, why 1984 over We by Zamyatin. My mind boggles. And I despise Dickens, Hardy is a far superior author.pfft.
