Re: Books you like but no one else has read?

I know I read the Silverwing series by Kenneth Oppel a few times over, and I liked that series. Still got to get Firewing on the shelf. One Day though...

Interesting that the main characters are bats--but there's a bit of anthropomorphism going on that niggles at me sometimes in that series though. I'm not a naturalist, but I know that most animals don't cry from emotion (like sadness as we would). I think that chimpanzees, cetaceans (dolphins, whales, porpoises) and perhaps elephants are the only ones that cry from an emotion-related thing other than humans.

But never mind that: the books pull me in enough each time so I forget all about that!

Funny you mention this. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy for ages, because I read Silverwing when I was about ten and never found the others to read them. I thought it was a beautifully written book- I mean, books about bats are both rare and kind of weird, but this one was really something else.

I fell in love with a bat for crying out loud! !!

Re: Books you like but no one else has read?

There is this book Cup of the World by John Dickinson. It was a really good book I had a really hard time putting it down. It is about a 16year old girl, Phaedra, who turns down all the suitors seeking for her hand because she is in love with a mysterious man who visits her in her dreams. As I said, it is an incredible book. It has a lot of the magical element we all love from Harry Potter, but it's black magic... Anyway, if anyone has the time to read this book, I guess message me or something and tell me how you liked or disliked it. I like to turn people on to other books. So...

I love Chuck Palahniuk's books, he has a style all his own and nobody can beat him at that game. My favourite by him - Lullaby - is relatively unknown amongst people I know but I did convince a friend to read it.

The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

It's about a girl who wanders away from her mom and brother when they are going on a nature hike and she gets lost for 9 days. She thinks something is following her and she sees dead animals in the trees plus her favorite baseball player Tom Gordon who she hallucinates goes along with her through the woods. It's not that scary and feels like it was written in a weekend by King but I like it none the less.

Battle Royale, by Koushun Takami.. It's a very controversial book in Japan.. It was made into a movie, and a manga, and Hollywood stole the idea, and made a movie based on it...
Most "Battle Royale" fans have no idea that it was a book first.. Or, that it's even a book at all.. O.O

White Oleander is another one.. It was made into a movie, and it's a best selling book, but I don't know of anyone else who has read it O.O

You're not alone!

Even my username, Marina was named after one of those main characters, when I'd signed up here a while ago. Now I'd rather something like Luna Maria or something--not a nickname after a fictional bat of all things!

I love books by Martin Millar. He writes light comedies, but they're always set in a lowlife, counter-culture setting (e.g. amongst New Age travellers, or anarchists or drug addicts living in squats in grim areas of London). It's like PG Wodehouse for crusties, or like Nick Hornby without all the smug Middle England morality.

I really liked The Alchemist.... I read some three years ago and I'm trying to get my hands on the book again but in vain....

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, without a doubt - and the fact that no one else in this thread has mentioned it sort of proves my point. It just seems like such an epic, spectacular book, combining magic and Regency England and good writing, but I'm not sure that I know even one friend who's read it.

That's one of my favorite books.

I like Janet Fitch's other novel, Paint it Black, better, though. I don't know anyone who's read that.

One novel that I have enjoyed reading was The Secrets of Jin S'hei by Alma Alexander.
I really liked that book too. The ending made me want to cry, but I couldn't help rereading the next time I found a copy at the library.

The Winter Prince, A Coalition of Lions and The Sunbird by Elizabeth E. Wein. They tell the story of King Arthur's sons, daughter and grandson - but as historical fiction, not fantasy. It's one of the best series I know, but I've never met another person who's heard of it.

Re: Books you like but no one else has read?

Apparently I am the only member of this forum who loves both of the following:

The fantasy novels of Guy Gavriel Kay (including Tigana, A Song for Arbonne, The Lions of Al-Rassan, and others). I think his writing is beautiful. His fantasy settings tend to be loosely based on real historical places, with the detailed, gritty feel of good historical fiction, but his own fantastic twist addded. Tigana, for example, is based loosely on Renaissance Italy with its feuding city-states, but there are wizards and gods thrown in to make it "fantasy".

The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. This is a brilliant SF series that has won several major awards, but no one here seems ot have heard of it. I love it for its brilliant characterizations, especially the main character, whom we meet for the first time at 17, but see at various points in his life.

Re: Books you like but no one else has read?

I have mentioned this book in some other thread here but it bears repeating. 'The White Tiger' by Aravind Adiga, won Booker's prize in 2008 is a very good read.

Also, there's this book called 'Five point someone' by Chetan Bhagat which deals with a group of student's life in the IIT's (Indian Institute of Technology) and it is really awesome.

No one that I know has ever read the Elizabeth Peters series or the Laurie R. King series - both (usually) murder mysteries, but totally awesome! Also - 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak - apparently quite popular, though I don't know anyone who has read it.

I love Dave Duncan's books. I can't find anyone who has read them. They are so much fun to read, definitely my comfort books.
