Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
I like all of them, but I would say Marauder's Era is the best.

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
Actually it really depends on the quality of the story.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
Comedy or Romance. Or both. However, I do like really intense stuff like Draco/Harry slash--it's usually awful, but hey, fanfiction isn't good most of the time.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Charcters that are IN CHARACTER. I cannot STAND OOC--especially when it's Snape or Hermione (my favorite characters.)
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Original Characters and romances that include a. incest b. a huge age gap or c. nonsense like Snape/anyone but Lily. *headdesk* *chants* He only loved her he only loved her he ony loved her.....
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yeah, loads. Mostly Snape/Lily, draco/Harry, or Marauder's Era comedy. Oh, and I have a series of Next Generation stories that are actually really good. *is surprised at quality of actual fanfiction*
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)

1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Er. None. OH! I did a Twilight crossover and had Harry and Ron kill Edward and Bella!
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same things as in HPFF.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same things as in HPFF.

-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
You are so organized it's painful.
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
'Original Characters'. THEY DO NOT BELONG THERE.

I only have a problem with OC's when they're primary characters. Jennifer transferred from Salem Institute of America and joined Gryffindor and is suddenly besties with the trio, oh wait, make that quartet ha ha ha .... no.

Necessary plot OC's, like new house elves at Malfoy Manor or shopkeepers that aren't canon from Diagon Alley, etc. Those don't bother me at all, as long as they're convincingly done.

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions

1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)

Other.
I like Fanfiction that tells a story about the past of a certain character, i.e A story about young Tom Riddle, Mcgonagall, Hermione, etc.

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other

A) & B)
I'd read Alternate Universe if it's main aim is comedy, and not changing things in canon merely because we didn'tlike them.

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other

I'd rather it included bits of everything. But as said above, if it's AU, I'd like it to be comedy.

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Details about characters we never go from the books. I usually have a picture in my mind for each character, but it's interesting to see what other people think about those characers.

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Hmm, it's true that I don't like to see the characters acting OOC, but still I don't like to see them repeating lines from the books. Flexibility according to the situations, while sticking to the character's character is the best thing.

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?

Never a whole one. I wrote some one-shots for various contests, though.
-----------------------------

B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)

1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)

None, . I never wrote or read fanfiction for anything except HP.

-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions

1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?

Fanfiction about characters that never existed in canon.

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

Questionaire:

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)

I like sticking to stories about the original gang.

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe

I don't mind either, but the AU can't be too out there - mainly for comedic reasons.

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
d) Comedy

I'm not too picky, but I do like the comedy ones the most, although a decent one is hard to find.

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Believability (in the characters actions and what is going around them) and canon (to an extent) and if it's 'fanon', it has to be IN character (Hermione doesn't suddenly move to America and 'gets hot' and catches Harry's eye )

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Incest, manip!Dumbledore, Weasley bashing (I like H/Hr fics and I see a lot of Weasley bashing in them and I cannot stand it - Ron is NOT abusive and Ginny is NOT promiscuous), adult/child character pairings, OOC, 'Americanisms', crossovers, crack!fics, summaries of the story that says stuff like "plz read, - sucky summary but story is better!!!1!' (this guarantees that I won't read), authors who whine and threaten readers because their lack of reviews - and my least favorite: Mary-Sues

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?

Yes, a few, for fun

1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?

Bad grammar and spelling (at least get the character's name right! If someone can't spell 'Hermione', I stop reading ). Also, Mary-Sues - these 3 top my list

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

I really used to be into fanfic but its been forever since I've read one. Anyhow, here's what I preferred:

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era): It had most of my favorite characters in it!
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended): I like these types of fanfics because soemtimes they give an explanation for something that perhaps J.K Rowling herself didn't go too in depth with (like what was James/Lily's first date like?)
b) Alternate Universe: I always used to wonder (and I still do) how the HP story could have been different if this or that was different (like... what if Sirius was in Slytherin?). So for me, the AU fanfics kind of answered that question
c) Other

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy

e) Other
I used to read so many of them!

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Something that was well written, with good grammar and spelling. I also liked an appealing story-line; something original. I'll admit, I did have a tendency to mainly read fanfics that were popular/had many views because I figured they would be the best (I bet I was wrong).

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Okay, I was picky! I didn't like OOC (out-of-character characters). I didn't like to read a poorly written/planned out fanfic or anything with too much 'fluff'. For some reason, I could never stand a fanfic that had 'the fifth marauder'. Mary Sues really got on my nerves (especially if the MS was the love interest). One thing I never minded though was OCs.

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
So... I attempted to write one in my notebook but it was lame and didn't go anywhere and my writing was the epitome of amateur (it still is lol) so I never posted it.

-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)

1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?

HP was really the only fanfiction I ever got into.

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

Questionaire:

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions

1. What type do you generally like to read?

b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
and sometimes a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

b) Romance (fluff)
d) Comedy

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Things that I would like JK to include in the books, like more Remus/Tonks relationship, or just a laugh with the characters I love, but the characters need to be cannon.

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Disturbing pairings *ahem* snape/hermione what *ahem*, out-of character personalities.

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Unfortunately, never tried

-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)

1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I don't write, but I like reading The Hunger Games parodies haha

2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Amusing stuff or interesting additions to the books

3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Everything I stated above

-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions

1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?

Bad grammar, superficial writing(such as rushing through the plot, not really caring about how the story sounds) and too many M situations.

I second that! Heck, I might even read it!

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?

Marauder-Era exclusively. Harry's generation holds no interest for me outside the books, I really don't care to read about wilding ships or how Neville goes on to be the most well loved herbology professor in the history of the school. I also don't care about "the next generation" as, sadly, I find that next gen stories are more often than not Harry's story over again with slight tweaks here and there.

I like the marauder era the most because there's the opportunity to work within the framework of established canon and with known and loved characters, but you can also delve into their psychology and how they ended up making the choices that they made. I like the idea of messing with our notions of who was good and who was bad, for example Sirius is a "good" character in canon but I love the idea of turning that idea on its head in his time at Hogwarts - yes, he fights for the "good" side but that doesn't mean he's not prejudiced or that he's completely accepting of everyone. Extrapolate that out to the other characters and I'm interested in reading that.

2. What do you like better?

For the most part I like storyline fanfic, ones that at least attempt to hold to canon, especially since I most enjoy reading marauder-era stuff.

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

I'll take anything except pure romance :vomit: I'll read anything if it's got a gripping, interesting or creative story or has a plot that hooks me. The problem is that most of the fanfiction I come across doesn't have a tight plot, doesn't stick to a story and leave the extraneous stuff by the wayside because a lot of fanfic readers like the extraneous stuff. I prefer my fanfic to read more like professional novels than like meandering tales.

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Good story and good characterization.

If the story wanders or I can't figure out what the characters want I'll drop the fic. If the characters are cliched or oversimplified I'll drop the fic. I want originality and creativity, not off-the-shelf.

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Cliches. Especially cliches predominant in the fanfiction world.

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?

Yes, but very few complete stories and they're not posted online anywhere. I write for myself as the pressure of posting online is too much for me if the story isn't complete.

B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)

1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)

I used to write X-Files fanfic and enjoyed dabbling in Pirates of the Carribean fanfic, but mostly because I like the time period. BTW, Jack Sparrow is a very difficult character to get right!

C) Other Questions

1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?

Anytime anyone in a story calls Lily "Lily Flower". Puke.
Stories that perpetuate the idea that Lily hates James down to her bones.
Stories that perpetuate the idea that James followed Lily around intoning non-stop date requests.
Stories that characterize Lily as Hermione over again.
Stories that characterize Lily as a sex-crazed closet bad girl who can't resist toying with James (the wide-eyed, innocent victim of her schemes)
Stories that characterize James as the sexy, irresistable bad boy with a heart of gold.
Stories that have no plot.
Stories that present the reader with no story question that would be answered at the end; in other words, stories that give me no reason to keep reading.
Stories that don't end but just keep going on and on and on and on and on and on and on...

(If you're thinking this is a long list, it could be longer, it's just been a very long time since I could stomach fanfic and to be honest I've forgotten even more pet peeves than I have listed here.)

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

Questionaire:

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Generally only read Marauder-Era fic where a character travels back in time. Its been awhile since then.
b) Hogwarts Era fics are a given.
c) I LOVE reading Next-Gen fics featuring Al through his years at Hogwarts, it's a pity these fics aren't really that popular.
d) Other-Founders Era, after Hogwarts before Next-Gen., RtB fics

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction, I like this because all the characters stay in character, but there has to be some change to the plot.
b) Alternate Universe, depends on the AU.
c) Other, time travel!

3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General (Yes)
b) Romance (YES)
c) Action (Kind of)
d) Comedy (not really, but not out of the question)
e) Other (Friendship, Adventure)

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A good story. A telling of a different story that wasn't in HP. Whether it be a different type of romance or adventure. I don't want a re-hash, but I don't want it to be completely different from the original story.

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Bad spelling and grammar, OC, OOC, character bashing.

6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, but it was a short one-shot done out of boredom.

I do read other fanfics besides HP, but my answers for these (the general answers) and be said for the other fanfics I read.

Re: Fan-Fiction Discussion (Including Harry Potter Fan-Fiction)

I don't know if this has already been mentioned. Has anyone read a HP fan fic called Stealing Harry? Someone recommended it to me, it is available only on-line, I believe. I can't remember who wrote it, but it's a great story. Remus and Sirius take Harry away from the Dursleys when he's 9 and bring him up, except on the nights when Sirius turns into a werewolf, in which case they hand Harry over to... Snape to babysit. At those times, Snape brings him to Hogwarts as his "nephew", changing his appearance a bit. And because he doesn't look so much like James any more, Snape comes to actually care for him. For me reading that story was great fun. I recommend it.

Oops, should I have filled up the questionnaire before posting this?

I think you meant to say nights when Remus turns into a werewolf.

Sounds interesting, though. Might look it up.
