Extending Chapters

My chapters that are mostly dialogue are always too short.

Re: Fluffing.

There is no set length required for chapters. Look at James Patterson. I've done chapters as short as eight pages and as long as seventeen.

That being said, you need action and movement as well as dialogue. Do your characters move around the room, touch, shoulder punch, secret handshake? Do they take a deep breath, sigh, smile, laugh, stop to think? Are they in a car or walking down the street with movement around them?

Plenty of opportunities to punch things up and break up the dialogue.

Re: Fluffing.

I've read no shortage of books with chapters shorter than that. There is no rule.

Re: Extending Chapters

What everyone else says, there is no rule. I've read chapters as short as two pages and as long as...well, it feels like the entire book could be one chapter. If it feels right being short then it is short.

I may disagree with you politically, religiously, and/or on Snape but that doesn't mean I dislike you.

Keep them to the point. Don't pad it.
