This was inevitable. There is more money to be made from the HP franchise. It's a good decision though to explore other elements of that world and not on the characters from the main series. Having the author involved is a bonus too. Her strength is still Harry Potter. The less said about The Casual Vacancy, the better.

I think it's be kinda awesome if Luna Lovegood was the main character for this project.

I didn't really think of it as a novelization, but that's what it would be. OK, I withdraw my question.

I can't wait to see what it will be like! I've missed the HP world a lot since all the movies were done...so the news were totally welcome that they would make another movie to the HP franchise!

I dont really know about this. I dont think it will generate as much hype as Harry Potter itself and may just be one movie that ends up as a disaster. But you never know. I will of course catch the movie when it comes.

It won't generate the hype that Harry Potter did - although it already has and is generating some, and maybe too much - but I think that's probably for the best. The more it's hyped up, the more disappointment is invited. This could end up a one-and-done - there have been too many would-be franchise-launchers that didn't launch their potential franchises in recent years - and that's one reason why I don't love that this is being positioned as a new series.

I agree. I think they're jumping the shark by planning a whole new series. While I am interested to see how this film ends up, I am no where near as excited about it as I was for the later HP films.

I don't know about jumping the shark, because I don't think we should say that before seeing it - but of course the idea is suspect. Then again, "the idea" is more than "a Fantastic Beasts movie" now, it's an expansion of it that's designed as a film series and written by Rowling herself. That, and the question of what her first screenplay will be like, is what has me excited for this in a different way than I ever was for a Potter film. I would actually be more disappointed if this didn't have an energy of its own and instead tried to replicate the Harry Potter story in style, scope, theme, or all of the above. I'm sure there will be similarities, but I more than welcome the differences.

I'm really excited about this! But I still wish she was writing a HP universe book, not a screenplay!

And another thing, since the Fantastic Beasts was a book with all proceeds going to charity, do you think Jo will donate or will Wb donate a small portion of the movie sales to charity?

I still hope JKR will make a new series with Albus Potter one day.

I didn't read the book. Apart from Newt, who is in them? I mean, are their other characters? Best of luck to JKR on this new adventure!

It's a reference book. There isn't any plot, nor characters. (There are small stories related to some of the beasts, but all/most have nothing to do with Newt).

No doubt it'll be billed as 'based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and like other movies with similar billing will have little resemblance to it.

Re: NEW PROJECT by JKR: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The Film

im also curious how this will all go down. i mean the book version is basically just a reference material narrated by Newt, but theres nothing about it that is in the form of a story structure unlike the previous 7 books.

maybe its why JKR gets to have full control of the screenplay is because she has to essentially build this from ground up. its not impossible, George Lucas was able to pull this off decades ago with that little saga of his called Star Wars :P

Well if this spin off is successful then I think they may try others. I found this link for 8 of them.

The more I think about this, the more I hope this is Jo's idea of how Encyclopedia should be done - apart from the beasts themselves, she will be building it from ground up... and she has lots of ground to cover.

This article says that WB has agreed to give JKR complete editorial control over the Fantastic Beasts script - as well as "future" scripts. Also Producer David Heyman is joining the movie.

Although if the script stinks a script doctor will be brought in to discreetly patch it up.

Whatever it takes.

And I still want Luna Lovegood to play a major part.

Well considering it so much into the past I dont think any of the HP characters will take part in the movie.

I agree that none of the HP characters will likely take any part in the new movie. However JKR could throw us a bone and have say a Lovegood grandparent, or other familiar surnames show up. Then again, the story is to be set in the US, so that might make including familiar surnames very difficult to justify.
