Codex Alera

Yet another book series written by the great Jim Butcher, author of the Dresden Files.

The book series contains of 6 books of which 5 are released
  1. Furies of Calderon (release date: October 5, 2004)
  2. Academ's Fury (release date: July 5, 2005)
  3. Cursor's Fury (release date: December 5, 2006)
  4. Captain's Fury (release date: December 4, 2007)
  5. Princep's Fury (release date: December 2, 2008)
  6. First Lord's Fury (release date: approx Nov 2009)
The books plays in a time equivalent to the Roman Empire and tells the story of Tavi, a young man who has withstand various adventures and who has to face the fact that he's different than all the other people. That is because he has no Furies.

Furies are element spirits which are devided in different species. Each person masters at least one Fury. Each Fury type has different powers like Water furies are perfect for shape shifting, air furies are used for flying, metal furies for fighting.

The different types of Furies are:
Water, Air, Fire, Wood, Earth and Metal

In my humble and utterly important opinion is Codex Alera the best Fantasy Series I read so far. I even say it's better than Dresden Files. Ok Ok maybe I'm alone with my opinion here.
But it's really too under-rated!!! READ IT!

For those who did already, who's your fav charactger and why? What is your favourite moment in the series so far and fav. quotes?

Re: Codex Alera

I've read up to Princep's Fury so far and I'm loving it! Too bad it's only gonna be 6 books.

I like almost all the character's. I'll have to read the entire series again to wittle it down for ya. lol...

No real favorite moments, for me. I love the entire story line.

As for it being better than Dresden Files? Not sure about that, them being such different stories and all. I love reading both equally.

Re: Codex Alera

I'm currently reading Princep's Fury.

I have many characters I like. Kitai, Amara, Fate, Ehren, Max, Tavi. God too many to choose.

As for scenes. I totally liked the Battle at the Elinarch. How they founded the Battlecrows and Knight Pisce.

What I didn't like was Amara's and Bernard's journey with Gaius to Kalarus.

I wished that people draw more fanart. There's too less fandom going on. There are so many scenes that are stuck in my head and where I wished to see pics of.

Re: Codex Alera

Is the Codex Alera an invention of Butcher's, or is it a historical thing?

Because in the Alchemyst (by Michael Scott), they race around the world chasing a book of spells called the "Codex"

just wonderin'...

Re: Codex Alera

This is a great series
I'm currently finishing Captain's fury, and so far my favorite part was probably the scene with the leviathans. My least favorite is also when Amara and Bernard travel with Gaius, I felt it dragged too much. My favorite Characters are basically all of them, but Kitai is funny, and Tavi is the main character, so it's probably a tie between them. So far I have noticed (and it's probably obvious) that every book has an element on it, so I guessed there would only be six

I hate Gaius for what he did. Would have thrown the coin in his face too and much more.

I only detected the covers with the elements on it a few days ago. Which version is that. I only own the ones with Tavi on it. I know that lots of people complain that he looks out of character on them, much too old. But I like it that way.

I looked up the covers a minute ago, and I have the ones with Tavi on them (and I think they're fine) and I was refering to them. At least the first four, because the first one has the windmanes (Air), the second has the arm things (Earth), The water lions (Water), then the flamehounds (Fire). That's how I see it at least...

Spoiler: show
And I agree about Gaius, I don't think what he did was right, but I knew he wasn't saying everything when they set out.

Re: Codex Alera

I love this series

All of the characters are interesting but my favourites would have to be Kitai and Ehren.

Ehren because he isn't typical hero material and Kitai because, besides being awesome, she has a great sense of humour.

I also like Varg.

My favourite scenes I'll have to get back to you on.

Ehren is really great, I agree.

You like Varg? I never thought that a Canim would be on anybody's fav list. I don't dislike him, but he's not one of my favs either. I just don't trust them. I find that Marats are more appealing, when it comes to liking.

Re: Codex Alera

I like his sense of honour. He says what he means and sticks by it. I was interested by what we saw of the Canim culture in Princep's Fury.

The Marat are more appealing I agree.

With what Gaius did, I can understand it so I can't hate him for it.

Re: Codex Alera

The Canim are very interesting, I always like hearing about them. The Marat are too, but I was a little disappointed that they haven't played an important part since the second book (I'm on the fourth though, so mabye they show up again) apart from Kitai. I've almost finished the fourth though, and I have the next from the library, so I will be reading it soon!

Re: Codex Alera

The Canim leader is interesting to me. He's one of my favorite characters from Codex Alera.

As for Gaius, I can understand his actions. He's always been one to do what needed doing so others wouldn't have to. I can respect him, as a character, for that.

I just don't like how we wiped out a whole bunch of innocent people. I think he is selfish, I never liked him.

Here is the cover for the last book. Does it look like "Metal" to you?

I'm not sure what else Gaius could have done though He isn't a character that I really like either, but I have sympathy for him. Whatever he did it would have been wrong. He had to make a decision.

It definitely looks like metal to me.
