Uglies series

Has anyone here heard of the Uglies series? (Uglies, Pretties, Specials and the new one, Extras)

They are soooooooooooo good!!!!!! in case you havent read it, its about this girl, Tally, set in this futuristic world, where when you turn 16, you have this operation that makes you super beautiful, which are called Pretties. A few months before she turns 16, she meets this other girl who doesnt want to become a Pretty, so she escapes, and Tally is forced by the city gov't to find her if she ever wants to get the operation. I would tell you more, but i dont wanna spoil it.

Re: Uglies series

Oh wow, I've finally found someone else who likes these!!!!! Or has read them at all, for that matter. I absolutely love them!!! I really have to re-read the whole series. I had the first two in soft cover, and when Specials came out, I refused to buy it in hard back, so I had to wait like, a year and a half to buy it, and by then I'd pretty much forgotten the first two, and had them very mixed up. I thought the end of Specials was really sad. I actually cried. I dont really know why, because in a way it wasn't sad but at the same time it was. If that made any sense. It may partly have been because I thought it was the last book, so knowing that Extras is coming makes me really happy!!

Re: Uglies series

I didn't know it was out already! Though if it's only in hardback yet, I may have to wait a long time again. Plus I have a whole shelf of books to read, so it may take a while. I tend to get distracted halfway through things. Anyway, I'm really excited to read Extras. I just wish I could convince some of my friends to read them, too.

Re: Uglies series

^Yeah, I want to read that really bad. I know a lot of people who couldn't get in to Uglies, but I loved them all. They're fantastic, and do carry a pretty good message.

Re: Uglies series

I don't understand why people don't like them. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but i thought it was pretty popular. lots of people at my school like them, even a few of the boys.

Re: Uglies series

I've read Uglies and it was ok, I read it because I read Peeps, another book by him, and Peeps is, in my opinion, much better. Uglies was an original book, I'll give it that, and I plan to read the rest of the series next semester when I have the time.

Re: Uglies series

I really liked Peeps, but I like Uglies more. Peeps was really good, and his idea about vampires was a very unique one, but I just like Uglies more. I think it's the fact that it's so much more possible. Normally I don't really like things like that, but here, I do. The fact that it's set in our world, our (at me least my) country no less, and one that is rapidly heading in that very direction just fascinates me. The scary thing is, he's proposing we'll be there in 300 years. A long time yes, but then again, not long at all. Look at where we were 300 years ago. 1707. Did they ever dream that a world like we have today could exist?? People just 50 years ago didn't even dream of technology like what we have now. THe very fact that this could happen, and in fact even sooner than 300 years away, is really what makes me like these books so much. Scary, yes, because I never want us to become like that, but rather interesting and fascinating, too.

Re: Uglies series

I loved it, but I liked specials more. I like reading things from more of the "bad guys" perspective. It just seems more interesting. Especially since it was something harder to fightthanbubble brain, and that was interesting to read about. Extras was great though. It was so cool with the whole idea of the society.

I've read peeps too, because i read the Uglies, it was really good, but i didn't really like the idea he put out about vampires. To think of vampires as an epidemic is just weird for me. I like the twilight interpretation of vampires better.

Re: Uglies series

Specials was pretty good, I guess, but I don't know..parts of it got a bit annoying. I got sick of all the drama. I mean, save that for The Clique books, please. I loved the ending of Specials...it was really exactly right.
I liked Extras a lot though, just because it was totally a fresh view...I mean, it hasn't been that long since Tally and Shay released the mind rain on the world, and already things have changed so much! I found that really interesting.
So was it just me, or was pretties slightly boring, like just a filler book?
I read peeps too. I liked the new version of vampires; it was definitely a different look at them, but I think I like the Twilight version better as well. So if you read Peeps, did you read The Last Days?

Re: Uglies series

I read Uglies and I really liked it. I love the message in the books, and the fact that the "bad guys" weren't generically evil or anything. I only didn't really fancy the Tally/David/Shay drama that much, but oh well. It was short lived! And I got shivers when they revealed "the secret".

I'm really looking forward to reading the next books, I'm going to get them as soon as my homework load eases up (missing a week of school is hell).

Re: Uglies series

I read the trilogy. It was interesting, but I wouldn't put it as one of my favorites. It was interesting to see how they make the world and try to make sure their world doesn't have the same mistakes as the one we live in now.

I think my only reason I wouldn't say I liked it a lot is because I'm not a fan of futuristic stuff or sci-fi in general. I can read it, but rarely will I ever love it. Not something against the book, just my preferences.

About Specials
Spoiler: show
What did you all think about the Zane/Tally/David thing? I was rooting for David, but I admit Zane's death was really sad.

Re: Uglies series

ADDICTED!

I saw Uglies in ALL the bookstores in Perth, and just had to buy it. That was last Thursday. On Thursaday night, when I came home from Perth, I went to our bookstore and picked up Pretties and Specials and had finished all three by Friday night.

OBSESSED! It's given me a new appreciation for sci fi actually. It was a very, very good concept.

However, you really have to read EVERY word. You can't skim, or you'll be like, 'Wait! What happened there???"

And Westerfeld writes relationships very G rated. That almost killed me. Especially cos I'm in love with David.

Spoiler: show
I'm in love with David. As soon as he was mentioned, I was like, I like this bloke. I flicked through Pretties and Specials to see if he was going to come back in it. I'm not a fan of Zane. In fact, he annoyed me quite a lot. He was always pressuring Tally to do things, not letting her speak for herself. It was sad though how Zane died though.

Re: Uglies series

Just finished Uglies, and I really liked it. I went out to buy pretties today. At least I wont get so many weird looks reading a book called pretties. I just have to say the closing lines of Uglies were pretty amazingly awesome. Can't wait to read pretties!
