Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

Flawless. The only word to describe it. Alan doesn't steal his scenes, he defines them.

And for all that, no Oscar nomination, no BAFTA nomination. The suits at the respective academies should be downright ashamed of themselves. In fact, no, they should be rounded up in the street and shot.

Sir Alan Rickman one day? Surely. Until then, I salute you, sir.

The buttons were a perfectly symbolic summation of Snape's role in the books-he had to keep so many secrets from so many people on both sides. I would like to know whose idea it was for the white undershirt. Symbolically, it suggests he's a good guy under all that black.

Rickman is anti-Monarchist, but other than that, I agree with you. His portrayal of Snape was the best acting of the series, i thought. He should have won the Oscar and BAFTA.

Not likely because he hasn't even got a lesser award as have some of the other HP actors.

Do we see him with a white shirt under his black clothing in the films? I can't remember a scene where he wasn't quaffed and buttoned-up which would preclude any white sleeve poking out or undershirt seen...

Well, there's certainly some white cuffs and collar showing for the Sacking of Severus Snape, just before Harry walks out and confronts him.

Edit > and looking back over some clips, it's there in previous films, right back to Philosopher's Stone.

Yes, also check my sig pic, which is Annie Liebovitz's Vanity Fair portrait from the PS/SS movie. It isn't always obvious, but he also wears a black cravat.

You can see it on the sleeve cuffs and on his collar (youtube "snape scenes [movie name]" if you want to see).

I've always liked the white shirt, but I never thought about the symbolism before

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

Star Wars stormtroopers are classic examples of the opposite-hard, shiny (hence artificial) white (good) on the outside but glimpses of black (evil), thru joints and eye sockets, on the inside.

If it was Rickman's suggestion to use the white undershirt, he may have known from the beginning whose side Snape was on. Or perhaps it was simply happy coincidence?

The dark purple jacket is also indicative of royalty-Half Blood Prince?

Oh, cool. Thanks for the clarification about the white shirt everyone

I'm not a huge fan on the movies so I don't watch them - like ever - but I agree that the symbolism of the white shirt is very cool.

And the thing about the storm troopers is kind of awesome, too.

I think the white shirt just completes the costume along with the black cravat, nothing particularly special. And no waistcoat -- sorry fanfic writers.

The color of Snape's costume is strange; sometimes black, other times purple or navy. People who've actually seen his suit on display say it's dark navy!

Yes the white is something symbolic. Costumers don't arbitrarily add elements like this without thought.

The purple could very well be a regal symbol but I've also read that sometimes deep purple suits film better than black for lighting purposes.

I agree. Especially since the white is nearly covered up--most people don't notice it at all.

I've heard purple is a very difficult color to capture on film and they have to tweak it toward blue to get it to show up properly. Perhaps. I could see it being used for lighting purposes, but then his robes are blacker in contrast--why have one and not the other?

Well, maybe he has 3 outfits--navy, purple and black! What a fashion plate!

Re: Alan Rickman as Severus Snape v3

When I was reading the books, before I ever watched any of the movies, I always pictured someone like Predrag Bjelac (who played Igor Karkaroff) as Snape. Once the first movie came out, I was immediately enchanted by Alan Rickman's stunning performance! Now, whenever I re-read the books, I see Alan Rickman as Snape, and it makes me love the books so much more! He was so incredibly perfect for that role! He is absolutely my favorite actor, and Snape is now my favorite character, thanks to his amazing portrayal!

That's who I usually picture whenever I read the books. He is 'Snape' to me, just the right person to play the role. The right amount of snark and menace.

He brings the role to life, and the other actors have to live up to it and bring their all to their parts as well.

Definitely . It's a real shame that he never got nominated for the role. He did an outstanding scene throughout the series.

Same here.
