Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

Got Storm Front and Fool Moon for Christmas - Absolutely brilliant.

Didn't quite get the relevance of Storm Front in relation to storms and the plot at first, but there's a major set piece in a storm isn't there? (I read too fast). I have to say, am I the only one who keeps forgetting Harry's American?

Books 1 and 2 are kind of repetitive and not terribly original - there's hundreds of rogue detectives who don't get along with the police - James Garner did it with Maverick, as well as Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. The only original feature so far is Harry's powers as a wizard and the type of criminals he encounters. I'm really enjoying the stories, but look forward to them getting better.

Question for other Dresden-ites. Isn't David Copperfield kind of young for Harry Dresden to be named after him? That struck me as odd.
Just finished book 8 this week and I completely retract what I said above. I love the series and can't wait for book 9 to be released this spring. Can't wait for the TV series - two weeks!

I live in Chicago and really liked the references. I can usually guess where Harry is while he travels around town, but still haven't decided where in the city he lives.

I think Thomas is my favorite character.

Excellent someone else who's read all 8!

Spoiler: show
Who do you think the traitor is? Oh! And what do you think Thomas is up to? And how sad are you that Murphy and Harry aren't getting together yet?

I was OK with Harry and Murphy for right now - I loved how Jim Butcher wrote Harry's disappointment. I think Thomas has it right - the questions is still open and Harry needs to do something to show Murphy he's right for her. I loved the glimpse we get of Murphy's personality - she's not all about work and thinks that Harry has no life outside work (which is true so far). Maybe Murphy will be Ginny to this Harry and show him what a normal life can be like.

I don't know what Thomas is up to - I'm terrified he's being set up to die because he's been removed from Harry's day-to-day. I can't puzzle out the traitor - The Merlin is obvious because he doesn't like Harry. I really hope it isn't Ebenezar. I'm starting the series over again because I read it so fast I've lost the details.

Someone posted on the Scifi forum a speculation that the Archive is Johnny Marcone's granddaughter; he's got a daughter who's a vegetable and Ivy's got a mother who's in a similar state. Intriguing, but I don't know the books well enough yet - I'm going to check out that theory while I'm rereading.

Whew! That was long!

Oh I like the Archive theory!

I don't know on the traitor either I think Merlin is too obvious but maybe it's a double blind. I really don't want it to be Ebenezer either I love him. I think whoever it is is a Denarian though. But like Nicodemus where they look human and just use the power to make them into like Super Wizard.

I told Morgoth my super brilliant theory that Harry is going to give the sword to Murphy now that she's been demoted because of how he sees her with his sight and apparently that's like the Harry is Gryffindor's Heir of Dresden theories and only silly annoying people who have only read the books twice come up with it

Ooooh, I like that! But I've only read them once, so what do I know?

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

My copy of Storm Front has literally JUST arrived at my work (it had to be signed for)...

I wonder whether my Manager will notice if I stop work now and start reading it?

Mine arrived a few days ago. I'm at the moment half way trough Fool Moon.
I love it so far, it cracks me up sometimes.

Harry has more great lines than I thought possible. He always seems to come up with something snarky even if it isn't the most appropriate thing to say at the time.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I should say that the books get more addictive the further into the series you get. Kinda like SS/PS and CoS. I don't think the first two books are as good as the series as a whole. It wasn't till I got through the first five (which I ordered all at the same time and did a kind of marathon read) that I realized how addicted I was

Sweet!

I've just finished Blood Rites {book 6} and am about to start on the 7th.

Hope you can sneak in a chapter or two on the sly.

It's written in an odd way, but you get used to it soon.

But Madeline I agree with you, there are many rememberable quotes and situations.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I loved the style from the beginning, but as in HP it took me some time to get what it could actually be about. Or better: that there is something more.

It's Justin! Harry mentions his old teacher way to much for him to be truly dead and gone. If Elaine managed to cheat death I think it would have been even easier for Justin.
