Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

Me being me, (a magnet for anything supernatural or magical), I wikipedia'd Dresden, and I'm officially hooked (more books to add to the Christmas list).

The wikipedia page for the Dresden TV show is here: Dresden TV show.

Interestingly, Nicholas Cage is executive producer.

Have to say Morgorth, that quote in your sig is hillarious, and that's coming from someone who hasn't got a clue who this Harry bloke is. (Dresden that is, not Potter).

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

[quote=62442al_Man;4068436]Which came first? Rowling's or Butcher? Just curious.

Rowling published The Sorcerer's Stone about 1 year and 6 months before Butcher published Storm Front. So the whole big Potter mania, with movies and all, wasn't so big yet (when Jim was writing).

Harry Dresden is named after Harry Houdini, as his father was a professional magician. It IS a wierd coincidence (to me anyway!) that TWO series about wizards named Harry are out there simultaneously!

As to quotes, the Dresden files are SO quotable it's hard to know where to start (stop?)...but my favorite is probably

"I the He** am Harry!"

Followed by....

"But just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean that there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face!"

And don't get me started on BOB! (Bob had better be as funny on the Tv show as he is in the books! )

That's a Harry quote. He's like that in the series. Quite the smart mouth.

Unfortunately, from experience, lego is also easily lost and/or broken.

Saw the commercial for the show last week while watching Dr. Who... my husband (without knowing) said "Wow that show looks dumb" and I said "But that's based on the book series I like!" He said "OK the books might be good but the show still looks dumb."

I adore Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden! He seems like a grown-up combo of Harry + Ron, with a dash a Neville. (How many times can one wizard get knocked down?!)

I enjoy the American/Wiccan slant to the magic. The pilot was completed this spring, but they are only just starting to write/produce the show. Should be out in January '07 (Sci-Fi). Been following the updates on Ex-Isle (the industry Insiders message board). The producers and the author, Jim Butcher, post there.

Not too happy about Harry's staff being a hockey stick, but I can live with the rest (Jeep vs. VW). At least they got a tall (6'3") actor, Paul Blackstone, for the part. Can't wait to see him ducking the ceiling fans in McNally's!
Thanks for the head's up on this. Haven't read them, don't know if they're available here...but will now check. Sounds like a dash of Dr. Who in there as well. Look forward to the Sci-Fi presentation.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

Many many thanks to the dedicated fans of Harry Dresden! Due to the intriguing and fascinating description of this series, I made a little trip to the bookstore. Read a bit out of the first book...

Bought all six books.

I'm on Dead Beat right now. This series is wonderful! I'm hooked.

Thanks again. I'm glad I found these books.

Glad you like the novels, MoonysAngel. That's exactly how I did it. I bought all the books at once. I can't put them down now.

The thing to note about the TV trailer is that it was all done pre-vis. So any special effects in the trailer are in fact just temporary. Also, the music is all temporary. Everything will be beefed up for the pilot.

Also the pilot is based on Storm Front. All episodes after that are stand alone episodes not based on the novels, so there will be differences.

Who has SciFi channel at their place? I don't and neither any equivalent channel. *sighs* So I hope people won't spoil the TV show here.

Re: Dresden Files - Latest News

I have just read that they added Terrance Mann to the cast!

I "think" he night be going to do the voice of Bob! Squeeee!

Terrance Mann has done many memorable Broadway roles over the years, but my favorite would have to be the original Chauvelin in the Scarlet Pimpernel, because I saw/and own, the original Broadway recording.

Terrance Mann singing "Falcon in the Dive" is never to be forgotten! What a voice!

Total Squeee factor!

(Squeeee is a Stargete forum term, sorry, but I don't know what you guys use here )

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I bought book one about two weeks ago, and I have read the first chapter. I must say, it is a good read so far. I think it will tide me over quite well until HP book 7 comes out.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I recently discovered Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden and I'm currently on Book 2. Can't wait to see the TV adaptation next year. Glad to hear from all of you that the 3rd book is really good. Books 1 and 2 are kind of repetitive and not terribly original - there's hundreds of rogue detectives who don't get along with the police - James Garner did it with Maverick, as well as Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. The only original feature so far is Harry's powers as a wizard and the type of criminals he encounters. I'm really enjoying the stories, but look forward to them getting better.

Question for other Dresden-ites. Isn't David Copperfield kind of young for Harry Dresden to be named after him? That struck me as odd.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I read these as they came out and really enjoyed them. One thing I like about the books is that there is an explanation for why wizards are using candles and fireplaces instead of electricity and central heating. It would seem that their magic interferes with machines, etc. So poor Harry is living in the equivalent of a dungeon. I loved the bits where he gets near a computer and it goes haywire and (do they?) explodes and the like. Electric lights shatter, etc.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

Hah, it's funny that I find this board, because I was just surfing my online book club for some new finds, and I came across this series and it looks really, really interesting... So I ordered the whole lot. Might as well take a risk. If I like it, I know I'll want to read them all and I won't want to wait, and if I don't like them, I'll just give them to someone. xD

And I didn't know they were making it into a TV series... Hmm... Hopefully (this is if the book is indeed good in my opinion) they won't butcher it like everyone else has butchered every other book-to-movie... Er, well, in this case, Book-to TV. I wonder if that's going to become a new trend... Book-to-TV?

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

I picked up the first book, Storm Front and finished it the same day. I love how the author mixes in some aspects of those old 50s PI type stories with the magical world. And for those who are looking for something to keep them busy until book 7 comes out any similarities between Harry Dresden and Harry Potter ends with the first name. The books aren't exactly kid friendly.

Re: Dresden Files - The Adult Wizard Harry

Great. I just lost a whole post for some reason...

*sigh*

The series comes to mind this:

It's a Raymond Chandler evening
At the end of someone's day
And I'm standing in my pocket
And I'm slowly turning grey.

I remember what I told you,
But I can't remember why
And the yellow leaves are falling
In a spiral from the sky

There's a body on the railings
That they can't identify
I'd like to reassure you
But I'm not that kind of guy

It's a Raymond Chandler evening
And the pavements are all wet
And I'm lurking in the shadows,
Because it hasn't happened...yet

*grumbles* Bob should remain a skull. (Although how he remains oversexed needs an overactive dirty imagination to figure that out)

Well.... This thread is bad bad bad.... I came in to check out what the whoohar is all about and after reading Morgoth's description of the book on the first page I ended up going and finding the website for Harry Dresden... Now, I've just ordered the first two books online...

As if I needed something else to spend money on

The books look to be very interesting and I'll be waiting impatiently to read them
