Why do you go on this forum?

Hi all! My name is Brittany and I'm a freshman in college. For my research writing project, I have to write about a particular fan site forum and I chose CosForums! I'm very new to this, so I was wondering if anyone would mind answering some questions that would be extremely helpful to my paper. Anything works! Here are some possible questions:

1) Why do you come to this site?
2) How do you interact with others on here the most? (owls, threads, etc.)
3) Have you made friends from this forum?
4) Do you role-play?
5) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?
6) Do you write fan fiction?
7) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?

And if you want to add anything, that would be super helpful! My paper has to be about online discourse communities and how fan fiction/roleplaying helps and benefits the users' lives.

Again, thank you, any help would be awesome

Just so you know, on CoS we do not allow roleplaying with the exception of three threads in the Quidditch Pitch Good luck with your project.

Re: Why do you go on this forum?

Happy to help with your college project Brittany...

1) Why do you come to this site?
To read other people's opinions about the books, movies and characters mainly and other things non-Potter related, on occasion

2) How do you interact with others on here the most? (owls, threads, etc.)
I post on some of the less analytical threads that don't require me to dig through tons of posts and reams of paper to support my screwball theories, and I exchange owls with a few people

3) Have you made friends from this forum?
Yes I have

4) Do you role-play?
No, not now. I used to years ago, but not in Harry Potter fandom.

5) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?
It would just take up too much time that I don't have, like posting on the analytical threads I mentioned before. I work and have other projects I'm working on.

6) Do you write fan fiction?
Yes, but only one, currently working. Hadn't written any before this.

7) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?
Because I'm mildly obsessed with the fictional character of Severus Snape? And I wanted him to have a better life than he had in the original books? That's the original reason I suppose. Sounds a little odd, even to me. In the process, I've discovered that writing fiction is a creative outlet that I'm enjoying quite a lot.

Re: Why do you go on this forum?

1) Why do you come to this site?
Originally it was because I didn't have anything to do at work then I found I enjoyed debating the books with people who have different opinions on the plots and characters (some of which made me look at the books in a different way).

2) How do you interact with others on here the most? (owls, threads, etc.)
I post in the threads and occasionally owl or post visitor messages to people when replying in thread would send it completely off topic.

3) Have you made friends from this forum?
Online acquaintances, I'd say, since I don't know any personal info about 99.9% of those I've interacted with.

4) Do you role-play?
Like dress up as characters? No. Like in role-playing games like D&D? No.

5) If no, why not?
The only time I would have ever dressed up was for the book 7 release and I didn't have the logistics in place as I was overseas and at the tail end of a 15-week long study abroad (it didn't make sense to cart around a costume I'd only wear once on the trip) and role-playing games have 1) never appealed to me and 2) never made sense to me in how they are played.

6) Do you write fan fiction?
... I try...

7) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?
For personal enjoyment and because I occasionally become overwhelmed with the need to siphon off creative energy and it sometimes comes out as fan fiction. Also, my main interest in fan fiction is the Marauder's era and it's extremely difficult if not impossible to find J/L fanfiction that isn't purely sappy romance (which I can't tolerate for more than about 1000 words) so my interest lies in writing J/L stuff in which their relationship plays a supporting role to a larger plot.

Re: Why do you go on this forum?

1) Why do you come to this site?

Lack of occupation combined with the delight of talking to certain members.

2) How do you interact with others on here the most? (owls, threads, etc.)

Most definitely owls.

3) Have you made friends from this forum?

One could say so, yes.

4) Do you role-play?

Depends what you mean by that.

5) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?

I suppose I can't answer this one either.

6) Do you write fan fiction?

No, I do not.

7) If yes, why do you? If no, why not?

I just don't.

Re: Why do you go on this forum?

Thank you to everyone who has replied so far, your input is greatly appreciated
For some clarification on the role-play question, another way to word it would be, do you talk to other users as if you are a specific character (does not have to be Harry, Ron, etc.) ? This does not include dressing up, or any other thing you could think of :P

A few other possible questions could be:

What do you get out of using this site?
Has this site helped you with anything? (i.e. writing skills, social skills)
How important is this site to you?

In that case, no, I do not role-play.

Re: Why do you go on this forum?

My question is - how are there 100-200 people always lurking, but they don't want to sign up/ sign in and participate? I don't get it. All you lurkers out there, sign up/ sign in and let me know!
