Just to increase my cultural awareness, is Lucifer a common name in Sweden?

I'm only asking because in America that's another name for the devil.

I might name a child Luna, 'cause I love her character and I've always loved that name. Many of the other HP names are quite pretty though... Hermione, Harry, Lily...

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

I don't know if I actually would go through with naming my children after some of the characters, but I'd probably go back and forth on it. The ones I would consider:

1. Lily
2. Hermione
3. James
4. Ginny? Maybe.
5. Harry

If I did use the names somehow, it'd partly be because I liked them, as well!

I love the name Sirius. My husband, however, is not a HP fan, and he doesn't understand.

If my hubby allowed me, I would name my son (if I had one) Harry, but I do see his point. Harry López does not make a very good combination.

It's not just American, it's a general Christianity thing, and Latin derived. But originally, in Hebrew mythology, "Lucifer" was not Satan, but he was separate, an oppressive King. Only later did he become associated with Satan.

In Latin, the word "Lucifer", meaning "Light-Bringer" (from lux, lucis, "light", and ferre, "to bear, bring"), is a name for the "Morning Star" (the planet Venus in its dawn appearances). Because, whenever Venus is visible at dawn, it heralds or "announce" the rising of the Sun.
Ironically, Jesus was also referred to in the bible as the "Morning Star". Figure that one out.

Nope. As much as I like certain character names, my kids named thus would be made fun of right about everywhere they go. You don't see many Slavic names in HP...

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

My little sisters name in actual fact is Lily , I'm jealous :P . My name is Nicole-Gina (double barrelled first name) and my mum sometimes playfully nicknames me Nicole -ginny -a but sadly thats the closest I've ever got to a HP name . The name Rose is very pretty and if I (ever) have a child and it's a girl I would seriously consider calling her Rose .

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

Being that I already have a son, and that I know he's all I'm ever going to have, the answer is nope.
Even if I were to have another, I probably wouldn't. "Harry" isn't that attractive of a name to me, Ron is okay, I guess, as is James, but not my faves.
"Hermione" is a little "out" there and far too obvious, I think, as is "Luna", though that's a cool name. "Draco" or "Severus" ?.. forget about it!

However, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" might have had some influence on my son's name, "Alex".
3 things, to be exact:

1) "Xander" is short for Alexander
2) My son's initials are "ASH", the same for "Anthony Stewart Head" (who plays Giles)
and ..
3) His middle name, "Sebastian", was the name of Sarah Michele's Gellar's brother in "Cruel Intentions".

or maybe they're more like coincidences.

Yeah, I was a Buffy freak years back ..but I just plain like my son's name, too

I love the name James, but I've always loved it. It's also my grandpa's name, so chances are if I have a son that will be his name. I kinda like Cedric as well. I'd like a daughter called Ginny too, but short for Virginia not Ginevra.

I might call my children Lily and George, but not because the names come from the Harry Potter series. I just like them, and they happen to be the names of to HP characters. I also like the name Rosemary, and if I have a girl and name her Rosemary, I will use Rose as a short name.

I know, this confused me when I looked at "other" Morning Stars. Though I didn't call myself Morning Star because of the Devil, but Venus and a character in a book.

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

I would so name my kids one of the Harry Potter names. I actually have discussions kind of like this all the time. Here are my top five:

1. Nymphadora
2. Harry
3. Remus
4. Fred
5. Sirius

And in case you didn't remember, Tonks' real name was Nymphadora. I like it a lot... it's unusual.

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

I'm done with having kids( I think ) but I don't think there are any names that jump out at me, I mean, I like Luna and Lavender but would I name my kid that..nope.. sort of off topic, there is a child in my daughters class named Aslan and I reeeally want to ask the mom if it's because of the Narnia books

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

I really love some of the unusual names in the Harry Potter books, like Nymphadora and Sirius, but I definitely wouldn't name any of my child after a character in the books.
First I'm French, so I think my kids would be made fun of if I call them an English name, and even if I were in a situation where I could give my kids English-sounding names (if I happen to marry an English-speaking guy for example), I don't think it's easy to carry a name related to any book and especially to the Harry Potter books.
However, I'm not likely to have children until 7 or 8 years, so maybe the Harry Potter mania will be over then....

But I would love to name a dog Sirius or a cat Crookshanks (or its French translation, Pattenrond).

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

I must admit that I would. Actually, I would be very tempted to name a son Brian Severus (which I chose as my username because it's what Harry should have named his youngest son, not Albus). However, I certainly wouldn't name my children anything really obviously from Harry Potter, and I wouldn't use any names that I don't like anyway (with all due respect to the Trio, I hate every one of their names). I have learned from my parents not to give children unusual names, because it causes such problems with paperwork and teasing. I would probably use Harry Potter names as middle names, where nobody will notice them...things like Severus, Remus, etc...

Re: Would you name your children after Harry Potter characters?

Maybe if I was English, I would.
But in Austria those names just don't fit and don't go with the last names.
