He sends them into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Not much of a punishment. As Harry himself noted, but of course Harry still thought of Snape as a bad guy at that point!
I was just about to bring that up myself! He certainly did that, and likely other things as well, but he had to be sneaky about it.
