But they are not filming the book (which is impossible: a book conveys its meaning via words; a film conveys its meaning via images); they are filming the story.

The difference is absolutely fundamental, and fans failure to grasp this is the root of their discontent.

I still don't understand the original question. Why would a film drive a person mad while they are reading a book????????????????????????????????
