Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

I've read a handful from this list

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Hamlet by William Shakespeare
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
The Diary of Anne Frank
The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
The Colour Purple by Alice Walker
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swft
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

Lord of the Flies and Robinson Crusoe actually belong on a list of books to avoid AT ALL COSTS for distinct reasons, but that's another subject.

  • Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden*

I've read more than I thought I would, still there are a few books on that list that I've been wanting to read. The most prominent is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It's a good list, I think. There pretty typical and most of them I expected.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

I've read the following, many of them for educational purposes, rather than for pleasure.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
A Passage to India by E.M. Forster
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Hamlet by William Shakespeare
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
The Bible by Various
The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
Money by Martin Amis
The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

Actually, I'm not sure I finished Robinson Crusoe, it was so dull. I can think of several IMO better books that should be on here, and, in general, I hate the idea of any sort of literary canon - it's a matter of taste. No book is empirically "better" than another book.

I've read seven of them:

Rebecca
Anna Karenina
His Dark Materials
Harry Potter series
Jane Eyre
Pride and Prejudice
Lord of the Rings
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

A few others are on my To Read Soon list, though.

  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • 1984 by George Orwell - *VOMIT*
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding - *VOMIT*
  • Hamlet by William Shakespeare
  • The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank
  • The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
  • His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
  • Rebecca by Daphine du Maurier
  • The Outsider by Albert Camus - *VOMIT*
I was quite surprised how many I agree with on that list, although it is still a little heavy on "classics" as defined as being controversial, thought-provoking, etc, rather than on actually being enjoyable to read.

I would add "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" by Louis de Bernières, "Fire Bringer" and "The Sight" by David Clement-Davies.

People who've said "The Bible" - have you read the whole thing?? :wow:

Actually, as it happens, yes.

Personally, I'd add Njals Saga, replace Wuthering Heights with Jane Eyre, Money with London Fields, stick some George Eliot, Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy on there...

It's very Anglocentric, as well. It's obviously not supposed to be "50 English Language Books to read Before You Die", because The Bible, Anne Frank and Anna Karenina are on there, but I can't believe that English language fiction is so vastly superior to the rest of the world's that we outnumber it 47 to 3.

EDIT: OK, I missed a few others, like Dante and Cervantes, but it still is very Anglo-centric.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

 I'm quite embarassed at the amount I've read. Obviously my high school English classes weren't adequate enough. (I've said it all along, of those I have read, only 2 were required for high school classes.) And I call myself a fan of reading.

Here's my list.

* The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

* Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
* Lord of the Flies by William Golding
* Hamlet by William Shakespeare
* The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fritzgerald
* The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
* Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
* Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
* The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

* The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
* The Divine Comedy by Alighieri Dante
* The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

I'm actually in the middle of The Count of Monte Cristo, but I know I'll finish it. It's a great story, and full of interesting moral questions. :D

Some of these, like Moby Dick and Robinson Crusoe, I attempted to read, but didn't finish. Most of the others are on my list... Kerouac in particular really interests me, and I may try On the Road next.

Re: 50 Books to Read Before You Die

Interesting thread. I'm impressed how many of these books some of you have read. I can come up with:
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  • To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • The Bible by Various (yes, the whole thing. Eons ago though)
  • The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer (not the whole thing. some of them at University)
  • The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
  • Rebecca by Daphine du Maurier
  • The Colour Purple by Alice Walker
  • Gulliver's Travels by Johnathan Swift
  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The bolded ones, I've read in the original language, the others in the German translation.

Not bad that list, IMO, considering that I'm German and have read some of the German classics who are missing on this list.
